I can live with a tax increase if it's for the right reasons. I can live with increased taxes even if I'm told now that taxes won't be raised. I'm a realist. We can't get our country into the financial shape I would like to see it in, unless taxes are raised at some point. That's the reality of it, and it's the burden of living in a democratic society where we all help fund programs for the entire country, even those who can't/won't help themselves. I'd also like to see cuts in government spending, and many of those cuts I'd like to see are in the administration of the programs everyone complains about. I think there's a lot of waste there, and more efficient ways to adminster them.

Now, if you want to bet whether or not that plan will change after he's elected, that's a different animal. As it is, sure! I'll take the bet!
August 30, 200818 yr If I remember what I read correctly Obama has proposed about 1 trillion in new spending. No way that happens with out a nice little tax hike. He also plans to do away with the Bush tax cuts although I am not positive how that will affect an average joe such as myself.

Keep the economy growing 4. Fix the deficit He better get some good accountants to play with the numbers because 2 and 3 don't go well together, and 1 and 4 won't either.

Question, if he can cut expenses and administration costs, wouldn't that generate the monies to fund spending more in other areas without an inoridnate tax increase?

Of course, I don't understand why not. But even in that case, the budget would remain at the deficit. You can't spend more, fix the deficit, and NOT raise taxes.

First, you can spend more in certain areas and still save money overall, if you make the right cuts in other places. The "spending more" comment is an alarmist talking point. Nice try, though! You are right, in that it is possible, but where in the world is Senator Obama going to come up with ~$400 billion of budget cuts? Both Obama and McCain are going to make cuts in certain areas, and both are going to spend in certain areas. From what I understand, estimates have McCain's spending around $60 billion, and Obama's proposed spending closer to ~$350 billion. And hey, if that's fine with you, be my guest. I don't support big government, but it's your right to if you want. But don't believe that Obama can simultaneously A) spend as he says he wants to B) not raise taxes AND C) fix the deficit. He can do any of those two, but I can't imagine all 3 being possible. Obama's proposed spending would be, from what I understand, around 15% of what the current budget is (NOTE- I'd like for someone to check my numbers here- but alas, since it is not a bashing post, it will likely be ignored by most everyone). And that is just spending on top of programs that already exist. Considering that Democrats are typically proponents of big government, I can't imagine that he would eliminate another 15%- and even if he did, that would STILL leave the deficit where it is. Like I said, he CAN do two, but not all three. If I am being unclear, I will try to clarify.
