Good question and after looking through the net, I found this explanation:

 

The wraparound shots are not satellite or aerial images. They are street-level snapshots from that location, collected by specialized vehicles contracted by Google to collect the images.

Now Google has said that if a person is captured on the image online OR it reveals anything someone wants private, they can contact Google to have it removed. Google has said that the shots are taken from public property and while they don't have the right to show a person's face, they do have the right to show a "street level" image.

Yeah, I didn't even know there was anything to download. I just use it right off the main Google screen.

You're talking about Google MAps, Google Earth is that good and I find it a little creepy.

It's all the same thing. You get the street views right off the Google Map. The download does (I think) offer some other functionality. But the street views work the same.

Wasn't there a movie with Denzel Washington that was based on this type of technology? He was investigating the murder of some girl and using satellite pictures (a bit unrealistically, of course) to track her activities, and therefore the killer, prior to the actual murder.
