Merriman's future in jeopardy?

Featured Replies

ProFootballTalk.com reports: “In the wake of a report that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman visited with renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews regarding Merriman’s knee, we’re hearing that there is quiet concern within the organization that Merriman could be done, after only four NFL seasons.”

That would be a big blow to SD. Steroids do bad things to your body Shawne.

Exactly. Sad situation for the Chargers, that "window of opportunity" for teams can close so quickly.

It's early, but meeting Dr. Andrews doesn't usually mean you're in great shape going in.

What kind of an effect would steroids have on his knee?

Steroids can cause damage to body parts, can't they? Or is that just long term? I'm not real sure.

Haven't you ever seen that commercial with the statue? :D

He's going to a 4th doctor after the first 3 told him to have the reconstructive surgery...

I'd have the surgery. He's a free agent after next year and he's going to get paid huge money. No way I'd risk that to play this season at less than 100%. Merriman is a big loss, but the Chargers are good enough to win without him. They signed Jyles Tucker to a pretty nice contract, so they're obviously confident in his ability.

Give me the fat contract over the Super Bowl ring any day of the week.

Why didn't he have the surgery in January? He said it's bothered him since December, right?

Ligament damage can arise from steroid use because muscles grow to abnormal size, putting extra stress on those ligaments and on your tendons as one uses these muscles. I don't know if there is a direct impact on the tissue itself.

Merriman says he's going to play and I think he is crazy to put off this surgery since he is going to have to do it anyway. I hope this doesn't hurt his long term career prospects.

I'd probably have the surgery. I wouldn't risk my career for one season and a possible Super Bowl.

Can he play at 100% with this injury? What I mean by that is, is it just a matter of him dealing with the pain? Or will he be at less than 100% no matter what?

I admire his desire to play through this, but there is no guarantee they'll win the Super Bowl and this is a huge risk.

With a torn PCL and LCL, there is no way he can be 100%, IMO.
