Merriman's future in jeopardy?

Featured Replies

With a torn PCL and LCL, there is no way he can be 100%, IMO.

Seems impossible to me as well, but I haven't actually heard it addressed.

How effective can he be? What percentage of his "max" could he play at with this injury?

They pretty high on Jyles Tucker. He had 3.5 sacks in 6 games as a rookie last year. Suppose Merriman will be about 75% if he plays...will he, at 75%, be as effective as a healthy Jyles Tucker? And, even if he is, will the difference be significant enough to risk his career? I don't think so.

The Chargers have enough talent defensively to absorb the loss of Merriman and enough talent overall to be a front runner for the Super Bowl without him. They showed last year that they can suck it up and win without key players. Is Merriman more valuable than Rivers, Tomlinson, or Gates? Gates, maybe, but not the other two.

I can't speak for the PCL and LCL, but I played baseball my entire junior year of high school on a torn ACL. The doctor put me in a special brace and I only experienced a few problems. He said there wasn't any more damage I could do to the knee by playing on it.

I also know someone from Madison Central who played football his senior year on a torn ACL. We both used the same doctor.

4th Doctor recommended surgery and Merriman is still opting to play this season. This could really turn scary and perhaps end up like a Boobie Miles type situation. As good as he is and as good as the Chargers are, I don't think one season is worth a whole career. Gutsy move, showing a lot of heart, but not a whole lot of brain.

Not that he was ever known to have been blessed with a lot of brains to begin with.

Apparently he was told it can't get any worse, so I can see why he wants to play, but I would have the surgery. As they were saying on 1st & 10 this morning, the Chargers will win whether he's out there or not.

That's what the doc told me when I tore my ACL

That is true.

I just dont see how its physically possible for him to play at a reasonably competitive level when there is that much ligament damage.

Lights Out may need to place a phone call to former Bengal Reggie Williams. Check out that nasty photo of Williams' knee. Ugh.

A cautionary tale
