Historical All-Time Team

Featured Replies

BDSS just had a show on the All-Time starting line up in the history of baseball. Let's try that on BGP. Name ONE position player for each position and ONE starter and One reliever from History, (You DID NOT have to see them play).

Here is my Team:

1B Lou Gehrig

2B Joe Morgan

SS Cal Ripken Jr.

3B Mike Schmidt

C Johnny Bench

RF Babe Ruth

CF Willie Mays

LF Ted Williams

SP Walter Johnson

RP Mariano Rivera

I totally agree with your team. I saw on Foxsports last night where they did their show. The differences were that Hank Aaron was in right field instead of Babe Ruth and Alex Rodriguez was at shortstop. At pitcher was Clemens (I believe) and Dennis Eckersly (spelling?)

C Johnny Bench

1B Lou Gehrig

2B Jackie Robinson

SS Ozzie Smith

3B Mike Schmidt

LF Kirby Puckett (I know he was cf but I was Kirb on my team :D)

CF Willie Mays

RF Hank Aaron

SP Bob Gibson

SU Rollie Fingers

C Mariano Rivera

Reserves

OF Reggie Jackson

OF Ricky Henderson (pinch hitting threat, and quality pinch runner)

IF Cal Ripken Jr.

3B Brooks Robinson

IF Ernie Banks

SP Nolan Ryan

SP Roger Clemens

SP Gaylord Perry

SP Juan Marichal

RP Dennis Eckersley

RP Trevor Hoffman

RP John Franco

RP Rod Beck (the mullet will live on!!!!!)

These are the guys I would bring to the park and play with anybody who wanted to play.

1 - Ty Cobb (CF)

2 - Honus Wagner (SS)

3 - Ted Williams (LF)

4 - Babe Ruth (RF)

5 - Lou Gehrig (1B)

6 - Rogers Hornsby (2B)

7 - Mike Schmidt (3B)

8 - Johnny Bench ©

SP - Sandy Koufax

RP - Mariono Rivera

I would want to add the position of utility player and put Pete Rose on the team somewhere.

I like it, but throw in Mickey Mantle somewhere for me. Let's make this RBI Baseball, and I'll put Ty Cobb at 2nd and The Mick in Center.

Thank you 5wide. Before I saw yours I was going to ask how anyone in their right mind could not have Ty Cobb on there.

Come on now no Barry Bonds! How can you make an all time team and not have Bonds. You might not like him and think he is a steroid machine, but he was one of the best ever.

As far as Cobb goes, that was the toughest decision either him or Mays.

I had Williams in the leftfield, he may be the greatest hitter to ever live and IMO is better than Bonds. Bonds is one of the best ever, he just isn't the BEST left fielder of All-Time.

I agree with you about Williams and your outfield was pretty solid, hard to argue about those three, but I think Bonds was a little better than Kirby Puckett.

I agree.....RIP Puck.

I wanted terribly to get Mantle and Willie Mays on there, but it wasn't possible. I had to have the "splendid splinter" and Babe Ruth...it came down to Cobb, Mantle and Mays for CF. I went with Cobb for several reasons, but here's a couple...1) he's widely considered to be the best player of the dead ball era and 2) I wanted a lead-off hitter on my team.:D

And, as cool as the names Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays are...Ty Cobb is that much cooler.

You're welcome. Guys like Cobb and Wagner get overlooked because players weren't blasting homers on a regular basis when they played. But, their stats are pretty amazing, IMO. Like I said, I'd have liked to find a way to get Mays and Mantle on my teams, but couldn't justify them over Ted Williams or Babe Ruth. I mean seriously, you gotta have the Babe on any all-time team.

I've always been a Bonds fan and wouldn't have a problem if someone wanted to pick him. But, I chose not to consider cheaters for my all-time team...that eliminated Bonds, McGwire and Clemens.
