I have much respect for Larry.

 

But he's wrong in this instance.

 

Mr. Football isn't based on what someone did in his career. At least, it's not supposed to be. It should be based on who the best senior is that year, regardless of what he did in his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons.

 

Pulley was simply the best player that season, IMO. It could have gone to either of those three athletes, but I think Pulley was just a hair better.

I've always been told it is to go to the top senior in the state, even though the best player in a season may be a junior or even an underclassman. It's like the Heisman used to be -- an award for seniors only.

Nope ... only seniors are eligible for both awards.

I used to be on one of the committees. Both awards are for seniors only.

Read the story,and I agree with Larry on this,the voting wasn't right. I think Turner or Smith should have been name Kentucky's Mr.Football of 2004.JMO

I have to agree with Larry on this one also. I will admit bias because I do live in Danville, but the 2 times I had the opportunity to watch Curtis Pulley play against Boyle County he didn't impress me. I watched Brandon and Kelvin a lot and every time they touched the field I was impressed. I was even more impressed when I realized how small Brandon Smith was outside of his pads. I didn't believe that the award should have gone to Pulley in 2004 and to this day I still don't think he should have gotten it. Turner or Smith should have been the winners in my opinion. It's not the first time an athlete has won Mr. Football based off of whether he is going to UK or not. Mr. Football is not based off of who the best athlete is, it is supposed to be based off of the better football player and I still happen to believe the Kelvin Turner and Brandon Smith had better years than Pulley. The fact that they led their teams to state titles at some point in their career adds credence to that statement in my opinion.

 

Larry Vaught was doing his job which is to present his opinion in print. He happens to live in Danville and Pulley's recent troubles provide any sage journalist an opportunity to walk down memory lane.

 

I wish Pulley nothing but the best and I hope he can get things in his life straightened out whether he plays football or not.

Were Turner and Smith seniors that year?

I'm not 100% sure on this, but i beleive that Brandon Smith and the Boyle Co. beat Curtis Pulley and Paducah Tillman in the Semi-finals to go to state? Correct me if im wrong.

Boyle beat Hopkinsville; that is where Pulley played. I believe that they also beat Paducah Tighlman as well..they had a qb named Hunter Cantwell(Louisville) and an all-world running back named Joe Casey I believe..

As another poster said, Smith and Pulley went head to head in the state-semis. I was at that game and there wasn't any doubt who was the best player. It was Smith hands down. I agree with Larry, it should have been Turner or Smith. But with the way both of them have conducted themselves on and off the field in college, the three State Championship rings that they have, along with the season's they both are on the horizons of this year, I bet they couldn't care less about who they got "beat" by in the '04 Mr. Football Award.

One thing to remember when considering this situation - the way the voting is counted and accumulated, with Smith and Turner being the two main candidates from Central / Eastern Kentucky, they split many of the votes. With Pulley being the only strong candidate from the western part of the state he racked up the votes from that area. Simple math folks. Hope Pulley works things out, but he definetely was not the better player when he played against Boyle ( I was at the game, and while Brandon played for a better team, there was no comparison as to which one was the better leader, the most valuable to their team and the better football player). Larry did a good job covering the story to make a point that he also ran a story on 4 years ago when the Mr. Football award was given. I wish all three the best of luck this season!
