Political Science classes a college requirement???

Featured Replies

So I'm sure many of you know what the Gen Ed requirements are for college.

I propose that they require ATLEAST 9 college credit hours of PSC classes.

Honestly I think it should be 12 hours including American Politics, State and Local government, International politics, as well as International Political Economy. However I'd settle for just the first three.

I've done some research and reading, and nearly 65% of all of the future jobs in the US will require some sort of college or secondary education. This to me is a huge opportunity for US, as in the voters, to makethings better for future generations, by requiring the ones that choose to, to truely be educated.

What say you???

A bit much IMO...

It was in my high school.

I had to take it junior high school, circa 1969.

Didn't you also have to take "Wheel, Fire and Other Modern Inventions?"

Civics should be a required high school class.

Absolutely. Before they become voters, kids need to have an understanding of the framework of our government and how it works. Well, how it is supposed to work, anyway. I don't have a problem with requiring a semester of it in college, either. Especially seeing what passes as curriculum at some universities these days.

Most schools have a required class that covers Civics. In our school, the required class is taken during the freshman year and includes government, economics and geography. We also offer a political science full year elective class that students can take during their junior or senior year.

And spelling should be a college requirement too!:D Just kidding.

I do agree with your thought. I would just hope that the professors teaching the poly sci classes would do it in a non biased way. From my experience, college professors (and law school professors too) can have a tendency to push their political beliefs (even when they aren't trying to do so).

I know what you mean. However my experiences in talking with other people that have taken PSC classes is that alot of times people have already established alot of their political values by college. They don't though understand exactly how the political process works. I just feel that too many people rely on the media to educate them about politics and the political process.

Also after some more thought I was only suggesting the 9-12 hours for people going for their bachelors. At most schools this would be less than 1/10 of the required course load to graduate.
