I'm a Newport grad myself and I'll tell you, it gets harder and harder each year to hear about all this talent that just won't play for the football team. Its a lot of thing's but mostly laziness and no discipline. Not naming names but I know of a couple of young men who could step in and really make a difference on this football team if they could just get their head straight.:madman:

Unfortunately, I agree with you.

It's only four. Wouldn't say it's a mass exit. However, the problem seems to be they are quality athletes. No one would notice if they were just the average joe.

 

For a school the size of their size, I would think it is pretty significant.

I think that a lot of these kids have the talent but some parents look at the academics. Newport academic level has been dropping and in fact IMO I believe a lot of inner city schools academics have dropped tremendously with the state labeling kids with this IEP. Some type of a so-call learning disability that educators have labeled IMO lazy students - basically kids that just don't care. Now, maybe there are few kids out there that deserve this IEP label but from what I've seen of some of these kids they are just flat out lazy and don't care. This IMO makes things harder on a student that is out there trying to make the grades and have to watch another student getting passed on through school.

 

This could be further from the truth. The schools do not label these students with a learning disability. Their parents have to take these kids to be tested to see if they do indeed have a learning disability. I do agree there are far to many students being labeled but its not the schools but the parents and doctors who get these kids labeled. There are a lot of benefits for a student with a learning disability to succeed but ultimately its up to the student to put forth the effort to learn. Please dont be so quick to blame the schools and educators because students are not learning. At some point, parents and students need to be held accountable for their education.....IMO

Seems like its been happening quite a bit since around 2000 or so. Some kids that come up thru the Newport system think they are too good to go school and play sports at Newport when they get to high school. Not saying this is the case with the kids recently because I dont know them personally and have no clue what their reasons for leaving are but I know this used to be the case.

 

I wonder who thinks they are to good for Newport the student or the parent? They should remember that an education is the most important part of school, and you can get that at Newport.

Your right Eagle therr is a lot of talented athletes at Newport that only play one sport and could contribute in others. There are also kids that don't play at all when they enter high school and have participated is sports all there life.The Ilg brothers will hurt Newport more because they were both a big part of the wrestling team, Housley was a contributer to the basketball team and when kids like that leave it hurts.

Sad to say but IMO a lot of people choose to send their kids to other schools because they believe the education level will be more advance than Newport. The sports is also a plus when some people and their kids see that the competition level is higher and increases a kids opportunity to be look at for a college. For example, what exactly is the student/athelete that attends Newport that actually goes to college and stays at a college? I'm not sure myself - I graduated from Newport myself and enjoyed very much but when I went to college I did notice that I wasn't up to speed as others were from other schools in the Commonwealth.

The old saying that one person doesn't make the entire team - well yes that is true but loosing one does hurt. Jacob Ilg will be missed on the front line for Newport's offense and in wrestling as well. Housley will be missed with the basketball program also. IMO there are still some talented atheletes there to make up the difference too. Basically, Newport needs to try to hold onto their talented kids.

You know, I actually agree with you up to a certain point. Yes, the parents and doctors add to the learning disabilities of a child too but I've also witnessed teachers pass a child along just because they claim to have a IEP. Now, is this really fair to a child - NO!

Im a special education teacher. Every student I have has a Individual Educational Plan (IEP). As long as a teacher is working toward the established goals which is agreed by parent and teacher, the student can and must be passed along. Also understand there are laws to ensure teachers are working toward the established goals, if not the school system can be sued.

The young men I'm talking about aren't even the ones you mentioned. These kids still attend school and are very very athletic. They choose to do other things in their spare time rather than compete athletically for their school. Its really sad. They are missing out on a great opportunity that they will surely regret when their high school years pass them by.

Sometimes it takes a town to raise a child. I've coached youth sports for many years and have seen a tremendous amount of Newport athlete either choose not to play or go to another school. Someone or should I say some people are not getting to job done. The athlete and their parent need to be convinced that Newport is the right place to win and the right place to receive a good education. You have to start when the child is young. By the time these kids get in seventh or eighth grade other school have already started working on them. Where is the support for these kids when they are young and proud to be from Newport. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking anyone from Newport. I'm just saying it has to be a group effort. If all the kids that Played for the Newport Fire Fighters Football Program or played for the (Steve Jones and Billy Sizemore coached) American Legion Baseball teams would have went to Newport and or played sports they would be a force in Football, Basketball and Baseball. Newport has a great base for athletics they just have to convince their own people that they want to be a Wildcat. Instill the pride in the youth so they want to play for the high school when they can. Coaches need to show up at the kids games once in a while don't wait till they get to be freshmen before you become interested. Thats too late.

Yeah, I heard about Ilg brothers leaving--not sure what impact they made in football, but I know they were an integral part of the wrestling team. Unfortunately, another big loss for Newport. I didn't hear their reason for leaving. Hopefully, they weren't "shopping" for another school and their transfer is due to a legitimate change of address. I'm sure the KHSAA will make sure of this before declaring them eligible for the upcoming seasons.

 

They are eligible to play. Though both will benefit from the Camels wrestling program, Jacob is already making a siginificant impact in early practices with the Camels. He has potential to be in the top 5 rankings for OL in NKY this year. Quite a stretch from his days in Newport, but does speak to his work ethic. He has broke into the starting line-up that was already set prior to summer practice. He is one of the best pulling linemen that the Camels have had in some time.
