July 4, 200818 yr Almost half a million for the year so far; no end in sight. http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jsanM66tszKz1zFq0LOG4XvWS7zAD91MLEO00
July 4, 200818 yr Old news to me locally. We've led Virginia in unemployment since around 1998, every single year.
July 4, 200818 yr It is always bad when people olse their jobs, a situation I have never been in. The only good report is that the jobless rate remains the same, because jobs were created in other areas. Some were helped, others were hurt.

While it does no good to those who are let go, we sometimes need to look at the big picture and realize that it was either let some go or close down the entire operation.

July 5, 200818 yr People in the past didn't mind the job they got as long as you got paid. Now, people don't want to work where there are job openings. Every fast food resturant has a help wanted sign in the window. You didn't see this 10 years ago. Temp services are having trouble finding help to fill their contracts. America has fallen into the Cousin Eddie Syndrome. Everyone is holding out for a management position.
July 5, 200818 yr I don't have a problem with that. Do you? Come to Martinsville and face the situation and see for yourself?

Or the basic production jobs that filled America's employment have been filled now overseas and we are left with a huge work force that is untrained or unskilled for any other work.
July 5, 200818 yr Author Manufacturing jobs have probably been "relocated" the most; obviously construction/housing is also way down. I guess the openings at Red Robin will take care of the economy, though...
July 5, 200818 yr Don't worry, Obama's tax increases on the rich will spur economic growth and make sure that the unemployed receive better compensation.
July 6, 200818 yr Come to Martinsville and face the situation and see for yourself? There are obviously people , and therefore, communities that suffer as a result of jobs moving elsewhere. However, unless the govt is going to give big incentives to companies in order for them to not go to cheaper labor elsewhere, we can't expect a business to run themselves out of business simply to keep the locals employed. Do we want SOME of the employees to lose their jobs or do we want ALL of the employees to lose their job. Read "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman.

For those that have lost their jobs, do you think they can support their families on fast food wages? Yes, there may be plenty of job opportunities, but most of them are low wages and no benefits. Not real encouraging for those who are jobless and trying to support and provide for a family. It's easy for those of us who have a good job or drawing a retirement benefit to say there are plenty of job opportunities if people would just get out and look for them. It's not that simple. I feel for those who have lost their jobs and hope that they will find some kind of employment that will at least pay the bills. I can't imagine being in their (unemployed) position.

Agree on all points. Its easy for those of us not living week to week point to "help wanted" ads and scoff at those who are the main wager earners of a family who pass them up.
