While I totally agree that the timing of this stinks, and is very unfair for the kids; especially without a new staff to bring in immediately. I've also been hearing about this for months, but assumed they'd decided to give the staff another year?

 

That said however, what has Brossart ever done to warrent the above statement?? They consistantly have some of the best run programs in NKY, and frequently overachieve in most sports; while always playing very aggresive schedules for a school their size. Kind of a cheap shot IMO?? :confused:

 

What doesn't surprise me is their arrogance. Say what you will, it's the truth. To think they can release a coach in June, when the season starts in a month, is arrogant IMO. These boys should be in a passing league, or practicing their stances, routes, plays, etc. Let's face it, how many kids on the BBHS teams have played football their entire lives? These boys need to be on a field working on their skills. It's a shame BBHS couldn't have hired their first choice a couple years ago, but the fact of the matter is they got people who were dedicated to Brossart.

Mustangs Seek Football Coaches; No Activity Til Notified

Bishop Brossart is actively seeking football coaches for the 2008 football season. Anyone interested in any positions on the staff for the upcoming season please contact Athletic Director Mel Webster at [email protected] or call my cell at 609-6937 ASAP.

Players will be notified of updates. Please do not report til practice until notified.

Bishop Brossart will field a varsity and jv football team this fall. Everyone will be onctacted and updated here when the next activity will be.

**I am not a football parent, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that stopping practices "until notifed" in the middle of June is not a good idea. I had heard that the coaches and the returning players had been attending weight lifting three days a week for several months already. This program needs all the support it can get and stopping it "until notified" is not supporting the kids. The first game (as the website says) is August 29 with a scrimmage Aug 22nd... With it being so late in the season, finding a "quality coach replacement" might be extremely difficult.

Shame on Brossart.

 

I noticed that the Olliers were supportive of a few other programs at Brossart, saw them at a few basketball games home and away, and baseball games this past year - always wearing their Brossart greens.

I am sure NewCath doesn't mind that Brossart is having all these problems.

This entire situation is sad for all involved. I went through this myself when I was a freshman at Newport in 1994. The Head Coach left for what he felt was an opportunity that he could not pass up the last week of July. Bob Miller came out of retirement to try to hold the program together for one year. Newport ended up 0-10 and the downward spiral continued. The following year Roy Lucas Sr. came and if you remember correctly you will remember how things got a whole lot better for Newport in a hurry.

The situation at Bishop Brossart is very sad and all three sides (Coaches, Administration, and Players) are all at an extreme disadvantage at this time.

 

The Coaches: I want to say that Rodney Ollier and his entire family are a class act and Bishop Brossart was very fortunate to have them. You will not find another coaching staff that always put the players well being first. These Coaches now hope to be picked up by a coaching staff although chances are high that they will be doing it for free considering that most staffs are in place, contracts are signed, and all the normal teams across not only the state but the entire country are practicing right now. This is an absolute slap in the face for Coach Ollier. Rodney, hang in there, better days will come.

The Administration: Now that the Administration has shown just how naive they are about running a football program, they will now struggle to find a quality replacement. Bishop Brossart will not get a quality replacement unless a godsend miracle happens. Most coaches are teachers, such as me, and we are locked into contracts for the coming school year and already practicing. The administration better have a good answer, you better have a teaching position open that pays well or hope that a Para Professional (who in my opinion are some of the best coaches out there) can get there job schedules fixed so that they can run a varsity football team. If you are going to fire a football coach, at least do it in November-December-January so that the new coach can start off winter conditioning and get to know the kids. It takes a long time for kids to gain the trust of a strange man who is going to work their tails and at the same time make them believe that they can win.

 

The Players: The biggest disadvantaged of the whole situation, the players. They are the ones who this is supposed to be about. The players are as of right now doubting that they are good enough to be coached by anyone.

 

I want to tell the players this directly who read this website:

Many times in life, you will come across a hurdle that you have no choice but to jump. This is one of those hurdles and a good one for you to jump. Many times there will be a hurdle in the way and you are really not sure if you can jump it. My advice to you is to Control the Controllable Factors. Remember, you cannot control who is hired, fired, or anything else that involves the administration or coaches. These are factors known as the non-controllable factors. The controllable factors that apply to you are giving 100% effort in the weight room and also in running/conditioning. On defense, playing your gap and tackling, on Offense, blocking and taking care of the football, perfection in the kicking game. These are the things that are controlled by you. Coaches cannot block or tackle anyone for you, we had our turn and now it is yours. Regardless of who they hire, control those controllable factors and you will jump this hurdle. Man this is terrible. I agree with all the statements on here. I really hope for the kids sake's they get this ship righted soon. Sounds like who ever does take it will be getting in 'it' deep though. I agree, it sounds like the administration is trying to write off football. Hang in there!!!! Seemed bleak for Berea a couple of years ago as well, but they toughed it out and managed to get a few wins last season, and are slated to get back into district play for the 2009 season. Granted, they got screwed on their district, but they're still up and running.

Arrogance or naivety? Mishandled--Yes. Timing--Stinks. But why "kick 'em while they're down"?? Agree with the need to be working on their skills, as most of the kids they will be getting now lack the experience. Another who wonders why they waited until now to make this move, as its been rumored for months?

 

The Ollier's need to be given the credit they are due for taking over the program last year, but were they really the right guys for the job? They did try to support the other programs, but did anyone ever see them in the community "selling" the program to the kids necessary to actually build the program long term??

 

IMO they (BBHS) made the move to Varsity play too early, and should have waited for the '09 realignment. In the wake of what happened at Lloyd, not hiring Yeagle may have been the right move, but it would have been interesting to see what "creditability" it would have lent to the fledgling program??

I think everyone know who is calling the shots:irked: As we all have heard in the past, "this is his last year". Well, I think this situtation points out it is time to make that change in this position now. I credit a person which has dedicated his life to the catholic school system and the role he has played, but now is the time for someone that is younger, hungry to move the school in a new direction and is ready to grow with this area to take BBHS to a new level. Also, regarding a teaching position, you already have 2 coaches out of the building teaching at other schools, why not one more. If I am not mistaken, Coach O was not in the building. While it is the most preferred that the Coach be in the buliding, it is a little to late for that. Go get a good young coach from a quality program and make this happen.

 

The kids and the future of this school/program are in serious danger of becoming a joke, lets do the right things and get this taken care of in the right manner and with bringing in the right person:

Hopefully they already have someone lined up before they pulled the trigger. If not, oh boy. Seems the athletic director is quick to point out the 10th region deal for basketball, before he should have is the word, hopefully he shows the same "athletic skills" in recouping from this move.

It would be a shame if the program folded. They hired the wrong guy to begin with. Could be a nice stepping stone for a former Beechwood Coach who has the tools to start and keep a program going!
