Any big first-round upsets?

Featured Replies

In the 5th Region, Green Co. (12-22) knocked off Nelson Co. (22-14) on the back of a strong pitching performance by Zack Humphrey, 6-1. The Cardinals whipped the Dragons 10-0 in the season opener.

Crittenden County (15-18) beat Hopkinsville (23-6) 9-8. It was Crittenden's first win in the region tournament in 31 years.

That is the thing about baseball though. IMO, more than any other sport, one player can change the outcome of the game. Is it an upset for Heath to beat PRP with Webb on the mound? Not really, but anyone else pitches and it would be. I love the semi-state round. In baseball the one and done doesn't really mean the best team has the best chance to win. Pitching matchups are a big factor in the outcome.

Russell beat Rowan, 15-12 tonight.

Rowan beat Russell earlier this season, 15-4.

That count?

And...

Dixie Heights beat Highlands tonight, 13-3.

Highlands beat DH 10-2 earlier this season.

Typical first-round upset ... Hopkinsville threw down, electing to save their best arms for the semifinals and finals, and it cost them. Crittenden won despite committing six errors.

After throwing 184 pitches and striking out 17 against Christian County in the 8th District title game, I'm not sure Hageman was able to pitch today for Hoptown if he wanted to. Smithson had been a solid #2 for Hoptown.

Just heard about that pitch count ... that's criminal.

Both he and Gilliland for Christian County threw nine innings in the title game. Gilliland threw 146 I think. Struck out nine and gave up three hits in nine innings. Of course, Hageman is just a sophomore.

Nothing against Hoptown at all, but that's kind of neat to see. A small school getting it's first regional win in decades is fun.

I only know what I've read on here about the situation, but are you saying a sophomore threw 184 pitches in a game?

I hope I've misread the information a bit. Because a sophomore, or any HS kid for that matter, throwing 184 pitches seems absurd to me.

Scribe, I'm not doubting your information, just hoping I missed something.

Scribe's information was entirely accurate ...

Who pitched for Crittenden, Wood?

Alex Wood started. Didn't have his great stuff but enough to get the win.

Henry co. beat Shelby co. 6-5 in the first round of the 8th. They also beat Oldham co. in the 2nd round tonight which is also an upset. Henry has never been to the finals of the region, let alone win a game in the region in atleast, if not more than a decade.

I would classify both as upsets. While Shelby County lost a lot from the FF team from last year, they were still picked to win the region.

What a strong year for Henry County sports.
