Your Favorite Rifles

Featured Replies

For close range hunting in brushy terrain I like a short carbine type gun with a hard hitting blunt nose bullet like a .30-30 or maybe a .35 whelen. I also prefer open sights. Another alternative would be a reliable 12 or 20 ga slug gun like a Remington 1100.

For longer shots on deer size game, I like a bolt action rifle like a Remington 700, with a quality scope. My caliber of choice would be the .270, but .30-06 or 7mm would also be great.

For really close encounters, a buick roadmaster stationwagon can be effective, but it tends to ruin a lot of good meat.:D

This year I have done all my deer hunting with a 50 caliber flint lock that I made.

I was wandering if it was safe to go back in the woods.

I never have been hunting in your erea though

but I have seen a lot of deer on six and twelve mile islands are you familiar with these places:)

You know it's funny since I live in Louisville and I have floated past them on the Belle of Louisville many times, but to be honest I've never been on them!

I have always wanted to make a Kentucky Long Rifle. Maybe a .32 caliber flintlock to hang over the fireplace. I would like to attempt to make the stock myself from a curly maple blank, and purchase the metal parts and the brass and then put a finish on them. I know the inletting of the "works" and the brass parts would be tricky for someone with no professional gunsmithing experience, but I would like to try. The barrel I would like to purchase already bored but unfinished. Then I could put a plumb brown bluing job on it.

How did you do yours, yoda1, and how much time/skill did it take?

What was the hardest part? Any tips for me?

I have several books but if I were to recamend one it would be " The Are of Building the Pennsylvania Longrifle". If you are really interested I can give you some names of some businesses that are good to deal with. The best advice I can give you is start out simple on your rifle and work sloooooooow, especially on your first one. As for as the hardest part for me I guess inleting all the different parts into the stock. Then drilling all the differant holes in the stock, for the ramrod, tang bolt, triggerplate, lock, barrel pins and thimbles. All most forgot you will need some good needle files. My best advice get the book! Time can not answer that one. If you are like me you will net be able to work on it every day and some days just an hour or two. Skill, if you have experience working with hand tools and woodworking you should be allright.

I know this about rifles, but reading about Yoda and Watusi's choices. I'm into blackpowder revolvers myself

I didn't proofread before I sent the message. The book I recommended is "The Art of Building the Pennsylvania Longrifle".

"Sorry but I find overkill humorous, when I see guys taking these huge guns with them hunting when all they need is a 22 or a bow I think it is funny. I was seeing if anyone else felt the same way. Sorry if I offended you, I was just teaseing. I prefer a remington 22."

Ram95... I assume you're not using that .22 to deer hunt. Unless the regulations have changed, that's illegal. Shooting a deer with a gun like that makes for a deer that dies later of infection.

"huge" guns, in case you didn't know, are used for deer to make a quick, clean kill.

It is a blast hunting squirrels with a .22, though. It's a good way to sharpen your shooting skills, too.

Yeah, I was reffering to small game. You'd be surprised to see the guns I have seen people kill rabbits, Turkeys, and squirrel with. But personally don't really hunt it all! I have said this before, I like to hunt with a camara. I am an expert marksman and I love camping and guns, and I have been on hunting trips before, but I don't like the taste of most game and I don't like to clean them. I have no problem with hunting, if I had to have something to eat I would do it, but and I am not against it in anyway I think it is a great sport. I just don't like to kill if I am not going to eat it, and I don't much like to eat it or go to all the trouble of cleaning it for others to eat it. I have never killed a deer with a gun, once with a Buick though:D

Mine are

30-30 win
