I was perusing the stats the other day and noticed this kid in almost every hitting category and ranked near the top. Hits for power, leads NKY in SB's at 25 and total bases has to be right up there as well. At 6'2 205 which is what one poster listed him at and a Sophomore, shouldnt Jones be considered for POY this season in D-11?

I saw him play the other day, he has a nice swing, but he is no where near 205 lbs. Maybe 170.

He is also a great kid for the team. A real team player, that's just happy playing baseball. If overall team standings aren't a consideration for POY he should be a canidate. He has elevated the level of play on his team and is a quiet team leader. I would venture to say he means more to his team than any other player in the area. Taking all aspects into consideration he should get POY consideration.

Valid point. Not saying Ferris isn't a leading candidate just think Jones has brought his team a long way and deserves consideration.

First off, let me just say that I was one who stated before the season started that Jones would be one of the best SS's in NKY this year. I've seen him play for several years in the summer and he is very good. Secondly, I very much agree with the statement that he means as much to his team as anyone. But with regard to his stats, the simple fact of the matter is that they are being built against some relatively weak competition compared to other potential POY candidates such as Farris, Maile, Adams, Elliott, etc.. Could he perform the same against better competition? Maybe. Maybe not. But I do feel that the quality of Bellevue's opponents - and therefore the quality of pitching that he has faced - is vastly different that what CCH, Boone, BHS, etc.. plays on a game in-game out basis and makes the stats (and specifically, his stats) a less reliable indicator of the true POY (assuming "POY" means the best all-around player in NKY and not just the person most valuable to their individual team).

Not looking to beat up on you.Thats your opinion and your intitled to it. Even if it an obvious big school one. Bellevue I believe has played 4 teams in Northern Kentucky Enquirers top ten this year already only losing by a combined 8 runs (take the early Beechwood game out and thats 3 teams by 3 runs). In the next week they have 3 more top ten teams scheduled. Don't beat up on the kids stats because they don't travel the state playing the whos who of Kentucky. In addition Bellevue went to Florida and played 3 very good teams of which his stats include. If you compare the schedules you will find that one third of the games are against the same teams as the teams of the players you mentioned. Smaller school doesn't always equate to lesser players. Give the kid his due. On the other hand I do believe in a proven player and the kids you mention are proven plalyers and are very deserving of POY honors.

After seeing Jones play, I have no doubt he could put up huge numbers against any competition around here. However, there's absolutely no doubt Bellevue doesn't play the same schedule as the "big" schools. What is Bellevue's enrollment by the way? I can't imagine it's that much less than schools like St. Henry or HC.

Which "big schools" are you speaking of? Bellevues has aprox. 220 kids in 9th through 12th.

Let me also clue you in on a couple of realities about scheduling in high school.

 

1. The NKAC is divided into three divisions by size. To compete in the conference yoiu MUST play each school in your division at least once. For Division III that covers six games.

 

2. Smaller schools usually have smaller budgets. Trips like Florida are done with parental fundraising. Busses, however, are a school expense and those funds are very limited so sometimes, trips outside NoKy aren't possible.

 

3. Others teams have to be willing to schedule you. Whether it is by prior reputation ot their own bias, some schools simply won't schedule certain teams.

 

4. By comparison to all the other Division III teams with the exception of Beechwood, Bellevue's schedule is pretty decent this year.

 

So, while I get your point, don't fault a kid for having success.

I don't think there was one person on here who is faulting him. I even said I honestly think he would put up monster numbers against any competition around here. The kid is a great player, and seems to have an even better passion for the game. I do, however, agree that Bellevue doesn't play as good of competition as some other schools, not saying it's their fault. Thank you for informing about all those realities that I was quite aware of though. Once again, don't skip this sentence this time, I for one feel that he would still be at the tops of NKy against any competition. The awesome thing is this kid is only a sophomore!

Never meant as a pointed reference toward you. Not in the least. I appreciate your position. Just don't always know how much others here realize when it comes to the realities of High School sports. I think you'll agree with me that the biggest joke ever associated with High School sports is the concept of a "level playing field" in competition, scheduling, rankings, statistics and/or even individual performances.

 

And you are absolutely right. Just a sophomore. The other great thing is, there are 5 more sophomores on that team that are currently playing with him.
