Italian Stallion Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 By modern I mean they have gotten big recently. 80's and before are out of the question, and 90's is up for debate. For the sake of the thread I will say John Mayer is the best modern guitarist. Either prove me wrong or agree with me. Don't just say I'm right or wrong, elaborate on your opinion. Describe what you think makes a guitarist great, and why what he does makes him better than everyone else. Remember.... modern, and explain.

The Sooner Surge Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 John Mayer is solid, but Im gonna have to go with Adam Jones.
dolamite Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Zakk Wylde is hands down best Modern Guitarist. He is just a flat out beast monster that continues to get better. I tell no lie when I say he is "the new generations Hendrix". I saw Zakk play in Louisville with BLS and he done the who Jimi thing with the star spangled banner, playing behind his head + playing with the teeth. Not just playing but ripping off an intense solo behind the head and with his teeth. Mayer is okay I give you that, he has the more soft rock vibe, bluesy, and kind of represents the new age Clapton to an extent. However, Zakk is just to much of a beast and is hands down the best right now. Can play so man styles its rediculous, and given you don't like his type of music, any music expert will tell you that his technicallity is far above that of any others out there. Can use pinch harmonics flawlessly, tap like he is Eddie V, can play as fast as anybody when he wants, chicken pick, you name it. Either with his Les Paul or to an acoustic Zakk is the best for sure, no argument needed. Like I said you may not like his style of music the best, but any music lover/expert would have to recognize his skill. The thread said elaborate and describe, hopefully I done enough of that, if not a video is coming .
dolamite Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 I made my rant on Zakk Wylde, but as far as other modern guitarists go I'm going to throw these out there. Dimebag Darrel Abbot (R.I.P) pantera, Damageplan Adam Jones Tool Pepper Keenan COC, Down Dave Navarro Janes Addiction, RHCP, solo Jerry Cantrell Alice N' Chains Derek Trucks guy is phenominal, plays with the Allman brothers now, and is great on slide guitar. He plays an SG with a slide and tears it up. Also has a few other projects he works and plays with. I know theres more, and probably some who's better but these are just some of my personal faves who could also without question be considered some of the best.

Oh believe me, I wasn't trying to single anybody out, I just know theres not as many metal fans out there and he is predominately a metal guitarist. However, he is great on an acoustic, and is a very fleuent blues player. A few vids are on the way.:thumb: And on a side note, I'm not down with too much radio play music unless its satelite radio, but I do like a lot of John Mayers music. Mayer is a great musician.

In the first couple of sentences I meant he done the whole Jimi Hendrix thing, how I ended up with who I don't know. Hopefully everyone put two and two together but I definately didn't mean to come off as confusing as saying "The Who" and Hendrix in the same stint.
dolamite Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Okay heres a Zakk Video but........WARNING.......put your facemask on please because theres a chance it will get melted off. In all seriousness though good video to watch if you watch it all the way through, he displays many of his guitar skills in just one solo. Gets the behind the head in, plays with teet, and eventually does the Star Spangled Banner, so if you watch, watch all the way through..... Enjoy.......
dolamite Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Jack White... GT I love Jack White. Good pick, I cannot believe I left him off my short list. Jacks many distortions are great, I love his style. Do you listen/like his stuff with the Raconteurs? I like them a lot, not as much as him and Meg with the White Stripes, but I love his work with the Raconteurs.
BoondockSaint Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Personally, as best guitarist in all styles and most innovative I'll take Tom Morello over any other modern guitarist any day of the week. Out of all of the modern guitarists I think Dean DeLeo is hands down the most underrated. I've always been a huge fan of John Frusciante and Jack White as well. For those of you mentioning Trucks and Mayer, here's a video you all should enjoy:

I really do like Zakk a lot but to be honest, as someone mentioned in a different thread playing fast doesn't equate to being a "great" guitarist in my mind. That solo doesn't impress me all that much to be honest and I think that Zakk is a better guitarist than what that video shows.
