Oh, I figured you were still throwing Malmsteen(the video I posted) in the general statement that almost anyone can learn to play fast.

 

Also saying that almost anyone can learn to play fast makes it sound like to me you won't give any fast guitar players a chance. I hope that's not true.

As for as a more modern guitar player, I feel the singer/guitarist Matt Pike from High on Fire is one of the best today.

Granted I'm not a big metal guy (I do like some) but I didn't really see anything from that to differentiate him from any other mainstream metal guitarist.

I didn't really figure it would, just trying to get him out there. Can't really find any videos of him just playing, as his genre is really more about riffs rather than full blown solos.

I forgot to mention Billy Howerdel as well. Anyone that can impress Maynard enough in one visit to make him form a side band while still with Tool is a ok in my book...

Agreed. Maynard knows good music and most def knows who to make good music with.

Another underrated guitarist is Mike Enzinger of Incubus. Granted I've been very disappointed in his innovation on the last few albums but his performance on the albums S.C.I.E.N.C.E./Make Yourself/Morning View really took new age guitar in a different direction.

Love Incubus and I love Mike. Its just sad that as Incubus mellowed out, so did Mikes playing. However, much of the transition in the bands playing/sound as to Mikes has to do with Dirk Lance leaving the band in 03'. Wouldn't you agree?

Most definitely. Dirk was one funky bass player, I mean that guy could really jam. I'm not really sure what their deal is as far as their writing goes anymore, it's not bad music now but it's certainly not what I've come to expect from Incubus. I think if you gave them the Light Grenades CD after they finished recording S.C.I.E.N.C.E. as said hey, this is what you all will sound like in the future they would laugh you right out of the room.

Agreed. He is very very innovative. Its definitely hard to pick up and play his stuff.

The would probably do more than laugh. They would probably say take this garbage and get out of here, how can you come in here and pass this off as Incubus.
