How serious are the Cincinnati Bengals about not giving in to Chad Johnson's trade demands?

Serious enough to swat away an offer from the Washington Redskins that could have netted the Bengals two first round draft picks, team and league sources said.

The Redskins offered this year's first round pick, No. 21 overall, and a conditional third rounder in 2009 that could escalate to a first rounder if Johnson and the Redskins hit certain performance levels, the sources said.

It was not the first time the Redskins approached the Bengals about a deal but it was the first significant proposal.

I am no expert on this situation, but it seems to me that this is a phenomenal deal. I wouldn't have expected to get a first-round deal. I know Marvin came out and said he is not leaving but someone please convince me what was wrong with this deal?

I'm with you...no way I'd pass on this deal. As I posted in the other thread, with all the picks they have in this draft, adding 4 first rounders over the next two seasons would give them the chance to completely change and rebuild this roster. With some good drafting, they could set themselves up very nicely for the future. Why would you want to keep a disgruntled WR instead of taking 2 first round picks?

I believe if this report is in fact true, and if this deal is still on the table after June 1st, Chad Johnson will be gone...either to Washington, or to a team that wants to offer more (which is unlikely, IMO).

Because the 8 million cap hit drains all of the rookie signing pool...

I thought the Bengals were well under the salary cap...

About 10 million total right now...

I thought they were in better shape than that cap-wise...

What is the hit after June 1st?

4 million in 08 and 09...

So, taking the deal after June 1st would work? I think that's the best course of action anyway...they might get a better deal by holding out.

However, I won't fault Cincy for keeping Chad. He will play football in 2008. He might sit out until the season starts, but he is not going to skip the season. If the Bengals can stay healthy and the defense can improve, they're still a very capable team with a lot of offensive talent...

Another dumb move by the Bengal organization...

If you take this deal, then who do you cut? You have to cut some significant salary in order to make this work.

I think it would be easy to find someone to cut on this team...
