April 22, 200818 yr Author Did anyone read my post, or the link it contained? Sure did. I saw the site earlier I provided a link too. I really think people misunderstand and have bad facts regarding the dog. A few bad rotten apples just ruin it for everyone! I am trying to look past "the fear" of the stories we hear. I am trying to find accurate information on they can be good dogs and not all pits are bad, and that website helped shed some light on that.
April 22, 200818 yr Did anyone read my post, or the link it contained? Funny you should ask. Yes, I read it and commented on it when KyFans11 posted the exact same link in post #45.
April 22, 200818 yr Dogs and Cats are for the most part out of control in our society I think they do need to be regulated some more and more strays need to be picked up and disposed of. There are 15 different cats that I run out of my yard on a daily basis I also step in Dog Crap everytime I mow my yard but I don't own a dog, I think that people who can't control thier dogs should be punished. Same for cat owners. As far as comparing guns to dogs, all I can say is wow.
April 22, 200818 yr Excellent post. I was almost certain that the "Little Rascal" dog was a pit bull, but didnt' want to post it without verification. Gentle Ben was a bear. Want one in your backyard?
April 22, 200818 yr I hadn't seen the previous post. It's obvious that most people's opinion on the matter is not going to change. I would just like people to learn a little about something before the condemn it. We see it all over out society though. There is a difference between a bear, a wild animal that easily outweighs any adult male, and a dog, which is an animal that has been domesticated for who knows how many years. Before anyone says "they were bred to kill" I must say, NO that is not true. They (pitt bulls) were bred to be affectionate towards people, and aggressive towards animals. With a little training and socialization as a puppy that aggresion can be stemmed. Most "pitt bull" attacks you hear about aren't even acutally pitt bulls, they're usually some type of mixed breed, or in some cases its an entirely different breed of dog. Using the logic that people seem to be following we need to just get rid of all breeds of dog that are over 50 pounds as an adult.

I have studied the Pitbull (AKA American Stafordshire Terrior). The dog is a result of an attempt to create the perfect dog for the pit whether it be bull baiting or dog fighting. The original breeder selected the bulldog, for obvious reasons concerning stubborness and strength, and bred in the qualities of a terrier. Anyone who has owned a Jack Russell or Fox terrior knows dynamite comes in small packages. These dogs were bred to be fearless, to follow a rodent or mammal right into it's den and attack an animal several times it's size. These dogs are indeed bred to be aggressive and although with socialization you may be able to keep it in check, it will always be there. My point is, whatever you find desirable in this dog (short of it's ability to kill), I can find for you in another breed while greatly reducing the chances that someone will be killed or injured. There is no reason for this dog to exist. Finally, the Little Rascal's dog, like Spuds McKenzie, was not a pitbull. It was a Bull Terrior, an entirely separate breed. I've attached a picture.
April 22, 200818 yr Gentle Ben was a bear. Want one in your backyard? Clarence the crossed lion? I seem to have an affinity towards lions lately:D

That is not the dog from the little rascals. Here he is. and yes, he was a pitt bull. I know I know, scary vicious child maulers. Its all about how you raise them, and unfortunatly too many pitt bulls have fallen into the hands of people like Mike Vick who abuse them making them dangerous violent dogs. This has given the breed a bad name that it does not deserve.

Not that dogs and guns are comparable, unless you are hunting, but nonetheless we are talking about choices and how some people would like to alter and take away your choices...
April 22, 200818 yr I was wrong about the breeding of the Little Rascal's dog, Petey. I relied on my memory rather than facts on that one although a little research revealed that there were several Peties and all but one were mixed breed although the pitbull influence is obvious enough. Still, using a pitbull (and professional trainer) in 1930s era films hardly justifies anything. I'll wager there were no seatbelts used at the time and smoking was not only condoned but endorsed on the movie set. It was a different era. I'm still waiting for someone to state what is desirable about owning this dog that is worthy of putting people, especially children, at risk? Tell me what you like about this dog and I'll select you a better breed.
April 22, 200818 yr By the way, notice that the dog pictured is looking intently off-stage at his trainer. I'm very impressed that it can refrain from attacking the child long enough to have it's picture taken.

April 22, 200818 yr What about my choice to select the breed of dog that I want. There is risk with any breed of dog. Dog's have been domesticated though, and when trained properly can act as a loving companion and pet. If you don't raise a child properly there is a distinct chance that they will turn out to be MUCH more dangerous than a pitt bull. ie: Charles Mansen, Ted Bundy, Lee Malvo, Columbine shooter etc... It just doesn't make much sense to me to outlaw a breed because it is, like any other breed larger than 40-50 pounds, dangerous when not trained / socialized properly. What do you think about Dobermans, or Rottwielers, St. Bernards, Akita's, Bull Mastiffs, Bull dogs, Chows, Labs, Retrievers, Huskies, Great Danes? I've heard stories of all of these types of dogs becoming aggressive and killing, mauling, and maiming. Should we ban these types as well? What about Jack Russells, and Chiuauas ? They are pretty aggressive and could actually hurt a pretty small child. Cats can scratch and give you a pretty bad sore that could become infected. I don't even need to talk about the risks of having a Boa constricter or a Pyton as a pet. Where do you draw the line. All of these are animals and there are inherent risks to irresponsible owners. I have personally seen more aggression shown towards humans from a Chocolate lab than I have from Pitt bulls. Thats just my personal experience though. Do I think that Chocolate labs should be banned? No. I Just think that the responsibility should fall on the owner to properly socialize and train their dog at a young age to prevent these things from happening.
April 22, 200818 yr Watch this video, please. It say's essentially what I'm trying to say. Mind you, I bought into the media hype before we adopted our dog ( not knowing what breed he was ) from the pound. We wouldn't have gotten him if we had known what breed he was due to the way that these dog's have been painted. Our dog is the most affectionate loving dog I've ever had or seen. He play's ( supervised ofcourse ) with the kid's around the neighborhood and they all love him. He is obedient, loving and affectionate. Pit bulls will be the absolute best at what you want them to be. Unfortunatley that is why some choose to train them to fight. Just a bit of info. The first recipient of a face transplant was attacked by a.... Lab I for one did not know that. I garuntee if it had been a Pit I would have known.
April 22, 200818 yr We actually have a Pit hound boxer mix, but people assume he is a Pit because of his body type and his head.
