April 11, 200818 yr Just caught wind that most courses are doing this at the time of the Ryder Cup. A lot of out of towners coming to town at Ryder Cup time and local courses are looking to cash in. Most of what I have heard has been in the $120 to $160 range. That is at least a 300 or 400 percent mark up for a lot of courses. I know this is what you pay for some nice courses in a lot of other states, but I think one of Kentucky's strong points on the golf landscape has been the low prices comparably to other states for the product you get. I think it could keep people from coming back knowing that the prices have been gouged at this time. Thoughts...

April 11, 200818 yr Author Price gouging, imo. Not a great way to welcome our guest to the Commonwealth. That is kind of what I am thinking. If people believe these are the regular prices, it doesnt really set us apart from the other states price wise like Kentucky is kind of known for. Now it is on par with a lot of other states price wise. Kind of brings me to another point. With the price of gas increasing, the price of everything else is increasing. If the trend doesn't change, look for your golf to become a lot more expensive over the next few years.

A lot of public courses had their rates go up this year because of things like fuel and the rising prices of fertilizers and such. An owner/pro can only hope the prices do not deter any customers during the Ryder Cup. Would be a huge help to the year when you are getting about triple the money on a round.

If you are going to the Ryder Cup I don't know how you would find the time to play golf, unless you skip a day.

April 14, 200818 yr What courses in the Jefferson County area can justify $160 to play? I could see a few of them charging higher rates if the demand is overwhelming that week (still price gouging imo though), but surely not some of the municipal courses.

I don't think the Lexington or Louisville City courses will do much driving up the prices. It is the others I would be worried about. You have Nevel Meade, Heritage Hills, and Quail Chase in Louisville right off the top of my head that are publics that could possibly be charging a lot more. I have heard of several in the Lexington area probably doing it too. I would think on that list would be The Bull, Griffin Gate, Cherry Blossom, Canewood, Peninsula, Golf Club of the Bluegrass, University Club, etc. That leaves out a few of the courses that arent in such good shape in the area and the city courses. Kearney could probably boost their prices and get it. Makes me wonder if the same type of thing will happen when the World Equestrian Games come to town in 2010.
