The coaches were announced this evening:

Nolan was the head boys coach at Cawood for at least the last 10 years or so. He had some very solid teams there and is a solid coach. He was easily the best head coach in Harlan Co. after Jones left.

Nolan was the Cawood boys coach for 12 seasons and won 210 games and five district championships. He was an assistant for the Cawood girls for three years before that.

Mike Jones will make Harlan County into a solid team come T-time. His teams seem to play better come late Feb. and March. I think they could have problems scoring early due to not having a veteran guard back from the three schools. What do you think HDE or any of you 13th region fans.

Would you not consider Dillon Cain and TJ Green from JACHS veteran guards or Tyrek Simmons, PD Creech, and Kyle Hogue from C-land?

Those guys all played a lot and have potential, but Leisge and Rhymer handled the ball in pressure situations and took all the big shots. Someone else will have do that next year if Harlan County is to reach its potential.

 

Harlan County will have good size and should be able to score inside, especially with Caldwell. They also have some good shooters from the wings with Creech and McCoun and others, but finding a ball-handler and penetrator will probably be the focus of the summer.

I think Tyrek will develop into a good Point Guard. With a little work, Blayne Rutherford will be a good 3-pointer shooter.

That was my point HDE. That is what I am saying, Jones and Harlan Co. will have to develop a go to point guard. I do agree that Simmons has the skills or maybe even Green with his strength. Coach Jones teams in the past have put the ball in his PG hands towards the end of games.

I'd like to know HDE's and other 13th region fans' thoughts on looking into the past 30 years or so, if the county school's consolidated back then, which years would've been some of the strongest and who would've coached?

That 86 bunch would be awesome. I loved watching Cawood that year and I remember Gaffney very well too. If I'm remembering correctly, 1990 would have been a good team as well. Lonnie and Jeff Huff from Cawood, Timmy Browning from Evarts just to name a few.

What about 2003, what are you thoughts then? Also, recent years with the talent Cumberland had combined with the other two schools?
