This next comment is intended as no disrespect toward Shelvin Mack. Great player, but he was a dark horse going into the season and probably didn't really expect to win it. His consistent outstanding play all year speaks well of his heart and character, as well as his ability, and to have even elbowed his way into the conversation says a lot.

 

Most acknowledge that this was a two-horse race between Miller and Hopson. I didn't see the Mason-Elliott first-round SW16 game, but I heard that Miller spent a lot of time out on the perimeter, which he has been known to do. Of course, with Hopson, that's ALL he does, and all he did against LexCath, a game I did see.

 

What set Miller apart from everyone, to me, was his willingness to do whatever it took to lift his team to a win. I saw the other three Mason games, and what impressed me about Darius is how he would take over offensively in big moments, and would do so either by going one-on-one on the perimeter, or more frequently, by getting down and dirty on the low blocks.

 

Add to that the outstanding defense he played and it paints a picture (or many of them, considering how many photos I took during the Sweet 16) of what kind of heart the kid has; heart that I didn't see evident in Hopson. Maybe he's just saving it for later, when it's more beneficial to his pocketbook, but I think it speaks to something else.

 

Anyway, in my opinion, the right guy won. Wish he'd gone to L'ville instead.

Maybe, State championships don't really mean much though.

Congrats to Darius. He was very impressive all year and was indeed the best player in the state. Great STUDENT-athlete and a great role model for the underclassmen at MC to try to take after in their future years.

Congrats to Darius. He will continue to look great playing in Rupp Arena!

I remember reading a recap of Mason County's loss to Warren Central in the 2004 final. Darius' play as an 8th grader was prominently mentioned - something along the lines of "basketball fans got a glimpse of the future last night".

 

Congratulations again to Darius. A fitting end to a great career. And two Mr. Basketballs for Mason County in the span of 5 years says a lot about the program and the young men that are part of the program.

I'm hoping that the report is correct. Darius is very deserving.

 

It is official! At 12:45 the Ky Lions Eye Foundation made a presentation at Mason County H.S. to Darrius Miller for 2008 Mr. Basketball. Congrats!

Nope, it's expected when you're the MVP of the State tournament, led your team to another state championship AND a top recruit in the nation.
