I think that's kind of ridiculous of him. No matter if you agree with him or not, he was one of the most influential people of the 90's.

So, Coach Paterno elected not to allow himself to be used as an attraction and photo-op at a Clinton campaign stop and he is being criticized for the decision. That is pretty amazing! :lol:

If Penn State, as Coach Paterno's employer, had asked him to greet Clinton and Paterno had refused, then I would be the first to support disciplinary action, including his dismissal. My understanding is that this was a personal decision by Paterno, so I do not understand why anybody has a problem with it.

I don't see it as any big deal. Unless he is required to do it as part of his job responsibilities,(and I don't see why it would be), it's a personal choice.

I agree, I think everyone has the right to show what a jerk they are.

 

Count me among as those who consider it disrespectful. Several times I've met with famous, conservative Republicans, and been able to hold my nose. Bill Clinton was a two-term President of the United States, and you have to have some respect for the office. Make a joke to your friends later about washing your hands, whatever, but shake his hand first.

 

I mean, if Paterno were so concerned about it being turned into a photo-op, request a private meeting, release a respectful statement afterwards to the press that it wasn't by any stretch an endorsement.

With all due respect, I really doubt that you are a person who is held in the same esteem as JoPa is in Pennsylvania.

 

If Billary would have been there just as an ex-president who now makes millions speaking I MIGHT agree with you. He was there however, campaigning for someone that Paterno disagrees with. An American still has the right to determine who he does or does not meet and can refuse to do so without showing disrespect. Any meeting that Billary had with Paterno would have been spun into a tacit endorsement by the Clinton campaign. That's why he was invited in the first place.

And all Joe Pa would have had to do is release a statement that he didn't agree politically with either Clinton and would never vote for Hillary personally, but that he chose to meet with the former Leader of the Free World. Not much they could do to spin that.

Now thay can't spin anything. Until Hillary's fate as a candidate is determined Billary's position as ex-president takes a backseat to his present role as campaigner for his wife.

I mean, I know everyone in this forum knows that I don't support Hillary for the nomination. I might be the only one posting in this thread that's backing her opponent in the current contest- the only one with a dog in the fight- and I think he should have met with Clinton.

I don't remember anyone saying he didn't have that right. I believe the first post I made was that he had every right to show everyone his backside if he so chose.

 

And, please, he could have easily made a strong enough statement that if the Clintons had dared try to call it an endorsement, it would have been used against them. Hillary probably would lose Pennsylvania if she were called out by Joe Pa on a fib.
