There is nothing disrespectful about declining any personal invitation. Clinton is a former president not a current king who can command an audience. Paterno respectfully declined an invitation and showed no disrespect in explaining his reasons.

I disagree. Out of respect for the office of U.S.A. President, rather you respect the man or not. A better approach would have been ..... at this time sir, I have a scheduling conflict. I did not vote for Clinton either time to set the record straight.

If the invitation had been extended by a sitting president, then respect for the office would be a factor. Bill Clinton is a former president and the "respect for the office" argument just does not fly in this case.

 

I would probably have accepted an invitation to meet Bill Clinton because he would have nothing to gain from the meeting. Even most of Bill Clinton's political enemies have given him positive reviews after meeting him in person. I always had a feeling that Bill was lying when I saw him speak in public and I would welcome a chance to shake his hand and take a closer look out of curiosity.

 

I would not accept an invitation from Jimmy Carter without being paid handsomely for my time. The same goes for Hillary. Clinton. If she has a good side it must be the bottom of her feet. Unlike her husband, rarely have I heard Hillary's political enemies use the word charming to describe personal encounters with her.

 

Except for stump speeches, Bill Clinton gets paid extremely well for making public appearances to speak to groups. Joe Paterno had nothing to gain from appearing with Bill Clinton and I doubt that he was offered an appearance fee.

You have got to be kidding me. I have great respect for the office of the Presidency. I have little respect for Bill Clinton because of his moral conduct. I don't owe him (or anyone else for that matter) any obligation to meet him. Politicians and people who work for politicians are way too impressed with politicians.
