April 4, 200818 yr I agree, but if he locates and keeps hitters off balance like he did today, with his stuff, there's no reason to not expect greatness from Cueto. I am not doubting it....he could come out and do this every outing.....highly doubtful.....but it;s possible. I just don't expect that from him. If he can keep them in the game, that's all you can ask of him.
April 4, 200818 yr Before Johnny Cueto made his major league debut, Reds manager Dusty Baker had a simple message for his 22-year old starter: "con calma, confianza." Baker said it translated to "be calm, confident." He could have added "extraordinario" -- because that’s what Cueto was on Thursday, striking out 10 and giving up only one hit and no walks in seven innings in his big league debut, a 3-2 Reds victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The thing is, Baker's instructions were like telling a tree to be still or water to be wet. "He shook his head like he always does, that little boy smile of his," Baker said. "He said, 'OK, no problem.'" Cueto pitched like not only were his nerves no problem, neither were the Diamondbacks. He was the first Red since 1900 (when the records can be traced) to strike out 10 batters in his Major League debut. Daisuke Matsuzaka accomplished the feat last season for the Boston Red Sox. "I'm giddy inside. I'm very excited," Baker said after the game. "I'm excited to hear the guys on the bench talking. They're saying they haven't seen this in a long time. In fact, I don't think they've ever seen it. There's a lot of things they haven't seen -- but there's a lot more to see from this young man." http://www.thelotd.com/ctrent/blog/2008/04/03/cueto_is_really_really_good

O I get what your saying his stuff won't be there everygame, but if he locates like he did today, he will be very sucessful, how Greg Maddux has made his living.
April 4, 200818 yr Johnny Cueto was everything that we thought Homer Bailey would be last year. No knock on Bailey, but this kid is now the savior, not you. Maybe now that all of the focus of the young pitcher is off of Homer and on Cueto, Bailey can now focus on bettering himself and getting himself to a high level again. I CAN NOT believe that this was not on TV today here. I was outraged. When I heard what he did though, I was happy inside. I was more excited than I have been in a while... a few hours to be exact when Edwin hit that walk off. There is an unlimited amount of what I can say about his performance.
April 4, 200818 yr Stat of the day from CTR... 10 Ks, 0 BB. Johnny Cueto was not just electric, but he was also in control all game. Not only did Cueto never walk a batter, nobody even got a three-ball count on him. The Reds are usually on the other end of these types of Rookie debuts. Maybe they have finally turned the corner.
April 4, 200818 yr Cueto was the 1st pitcher since 1900 to throw 10 k's without issuing a walk. WOW I heard that stat this morning or last night, just stunning. When you think of all the pitchers that will make their first ever start year in and year out. Just unreal.
