2008 Johnson Central

What does Johnson Central need to do to improve in 2008? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.

JC loses some major playmakers in Grimm, Welch, and Dials, but I still expect the Eagles to field a solid team.

Dillon and Richardson is as good of a 1-2 punch you will find anywhere in EKY in the backfield, and the Eagles return the brunt of their linemen.

The key to the Eagle's improvement lies solely on offense with their ability to establish a balanced offensive attack to compliment what should be a sound running game. Defensively, JC showed flashes of being very good last year, but their depth and ability to stop the interior running game really proved to be a fatal flaw (along with a lack of overall team speed).

JC should be right in the thick of things for the district title and as a contender in the region. I don't think they have enough integral pieces to make a legitimate run at Louisville this season though.

Ian Welch will be a senior this upcoming season.

Yes, but the Eagles lose JK Ratliff the starting QB.

Just put it in the air and let Wlech get it... I said it last year, and will say it again, the best football player on JCHS's squad was Welch. the kid has great natural instincts.

Who is on schedule in '08?

This team played a brutal '07 schedule, or at least I think they did. Most likely a Top 5 mountain team possibly higher.

Belfry, Ashland, Montgomery County, Woodford County, Bryan Station and Paintsville are games that I know of.

True, but the Eagles will have 2 very capable QB to fill Ratliff's void. It was during Ratliff's Junior year, after he sustained a broken collarbone, that Dennis Dillon stepped in and continued the Eagles march for a perfect regular season. But dont expect Dillon to be the front runner or starter next year under center. Sophomore to be JK Hall should be the Eagle playcaller next season as he posses a strong arm, not as strong as Ratliff, and tons of athleticism. The Eagles will be able to use a more diverse rushing and passing attack with Hall at the QB position due to his speed.

So, will the eagles still run there downhill power offense? With the losses of Grimm and Dials could it be possable to see them run an open shot gun offense?

They lost Grimm but returned their other two starting HB's in the wishbone, I would certainly think that with Dillon and Richardson back you won't see much of a change. Dials played TE.

I am aware that Dials played TE. Do they have any kids that can replace him at TE? He was a very important part of the offense, blocking the defensive ends. I think #1 came in for him when he got hurt against Montgomery in the playoffs. It will he hard to replace such a good blocking TE.

Maybe a little split back veer option??? I know that Jim Matney loves the 2nd back out of the full house, but I wouldn't count the option out espiecally if the QB is a quality runner too.

The Wishbone is Coach Matney's mainstay. The Eagles still have the players and ability to run there grinding out ground game. FB Chase Richardson along with HB Nathan Dillon return to the Backfield. Dillon showed many games what explosiveness and power he had when teams where keying on Grimm. There will be a hefty battle for the 3rd back in the wishbone. But I wouldnt expect to just see 3 backs play in the backfield due to the depth JC will have at the RB position this coming year.

JC had options out of its wishbone set and spread sets but didnt have the QB with ability to run them effectively. With either Hall or Dillon at the QB position, JC will be able to keep defense's honest in terms of respecting the QB as a running threat in the option.
