Just a simple question that some one might know the official answer to: If a basketball player is going to become a mother or father, are they eligible to play basketball?

To make myself clearer if a boy or girl is in High School & is going to become a mother or a father "while in school" are they eligible to play basketball? I am not meaning an adult. I am talking about a 15 or 16 year old child!

medical question than a KHSAA question. How on earth would a coach, teammate or official know if a girl is pregnant. As for whether or not a boy is a father and playing basketball - does it really matter to KHSAA as long as the boy is meeting all of the other eligibility requirements? If a coach would know that a girl is pregnant and playing that would fall to the coaches responsibility to act.

Yae thay can still partcipate if they are becoming a parent or thay are already a parent.

I see no khsaa issue with this. My hope is that He or She takes this as a life lesson, being a parent first, student second and player third.

What about this scenario (if this were the rule(? A boy plays the entire season and his team wins the State Championship. His girlfriend was pregnant for the entire season but he and her denied the child was his. After the season was over the child was born and paternity test proved that the child was his. Does that school have to forfeit all their wins due to using an ineligible player?

 

I don't think there is any way the KHSAA could get by with a rule like this. It wouldn't be long before someone filed a discrimination lawsuit.

Been on BGP since 2006 and i have never came across anything like this before...

I think that I'll leave the answer to this question up to the player's doctor!

I know of a situation in the 12th Region where a girl is just about to return to her team following the recent birth of child. As for the question, as long as the doctor clears the player then I see no problem with it. One would just hope the player is doing first what is in the best interest of the child.
