John McCain --- Why Should I Vote for Him?

 

Because he is not Barrack Hussein Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton and he will not surrender the progress that has been made in Iraq by creating a dangerous vacuum through surrender. Other than those reasons, I am still searching for reasons to vote for McCain myself. I really get tired of voting against candidates.

 

I'm not basing my vote completely on the Iraq issue...

Some of the reasons I'll vote for McCain:

I respect him. He is a West Point Graduate, Vietnam Veteran and survivor of a POW camp. I feel this also allows him to make experienced, educated tactical decisions on the war, while keeping in mind the horrors of war that our troops are going through.

 

He's been one of the few candidates that will support NAFTA. While many of the Democratic candidates have talked about the side effects of NAFTA, McCain has been a supporter. A significant amount of our oil comes from Canada, and eliminating free trade (of course, if you are a conservative is never a good thing) with Canada will cause the price of gas in America to continue to climb.

 

Again, this is all my opinion (and I am no expert), and maybe these issues don't matter to you, but these are just some of the reasons I encourage you to consider McCain.

That's fine, but what are you looking for in a president? Wouldn't that give you the answer?

Can anyone provide any reason for me to vote for McCain other than simply because I shouldn't vote for Hillary or Obama?

Let me give you one. McCain's historical contacts in the legal community lead me to believe he will appoint federalist (legally conservative) justices to the Supreme Court.

That's fine, but what are you looking for in a president? Wouldn't that give you the answer?

 

Nothing really specific honestly. To make a post about it, I'd have to sit and think about it for a while. I just want a President who's smart and makes the best decisions for the country. Something I don't believe our current President always does.

I guess the best any of us can do is to listen to what they have to say, decipher what we think is promises only, weigh the good and the bad and base our decision on what's left. Not any help, I know, but I don't know you well enough to give you any advice on what might help you make your decision.

I'm just giving conservatives the opportunity to say something good about John McCain instead of constantly bashing Hillary or Obama. I might start a similar thread for them, giving liberals and democrats the opportunity to tell me something good about the other candidates.

I'm not much of a fan of any of the three. I'll be going with the "lesser evil" as people say. Not a very good crop of candidates this go around IMO.

You actually believe Obama's going to pull the troops out of Iraq immediately (which would be really stupid) or the rest of the "pie in the sky" garbage he's handing you?

Perhaps one more short-term reason to applaud McCain: he has not jumped on the mortgage bailout bandwagon, and is being criticized for it.

McCain's consistent opposition to earmarks and his opposition to mortgage bailouts are two positions that I think most conservatives strongly support.

I just want a President who's smart and makes the best decisions for the country.

That's the main reason I'm voting for McCain.

Also, since you excluded talking about the Obama/Clinton bad points, there really is nothing to discuss. The only reason to vote for McCain is because the alternative is worse.

 

Considering that all I've been able to do is vote against certain candidates since I became eligible to vote, rather than vote "for" a great candidate, I'll continue to do as such.

In many ways, I really like McCain. I think he would come to office without a pre-set agenda and I feel he is a leader that I could respect. I've said it all along - even though I am a democrat, he may get my vote...it's just too soon to tell.
