It was brought up that Carlisle County native David Henley was taking Holmes to the state this year.

 

This is the 25th anniversary of the Finals game that he played in. David Henley was a staring guard on that team. Which went 40-4 and only losing games to Henry Clay, Lou. Ballard, Lou. Male, and Baltimore Dunbar.

Male had Winston Bennett that year and Baltimore Dunbar had Mugsy Bougues, Reggie Lewis, and I think Reggie Williams on that team.

 

Carlisle County (school of about 250) battled Lex. Henry Clay (enrollment very high, LOL) to a triple OT game in which Henry Clay won on a last second tip in by Greg Bates.

 

The Final Score was 35-33. I know they are honoring Lex. Henry Clay's team but it would be nice if they honored Carlisle county as well.

 

A lot of people say that it was the best championship game ever played.

Craynor Slone was a terrific coach, and I loved that Carlisle team ... I almost cried when they lost to Henry Clay on that last-second putback.

 

The Baltimore Dunbar team that beat them had three NBA first-round draft picks and several Division I players. Reggie Williams, Muggsy Bogues and Reggie Lewis were the first-round picks, and Dunbar was so talented and deep that Lewis was the sixth man.

Did Carlisle County have any size to play with the likes of those teams?

 

Was Cliff Hagan's boy, Kip, on that Henry Clay team?

Not to highjack the thread, but that was the year after Paul Andrews hit a half court shot to win the state championship for Laurel County I think, which was the year after Simon Kenton won the Ninth Region's only state championship - those were two consecutive pretty historic state tournaments (three to those of us in northern Ky).

I was at all these games you mention. The 1980's were the golden years in state tourney games, when you also consider the Clay County-Ballard battles in 1987 and 1988.

 

The 1983 championship game was unbelievable. I was rooting for Carlisle County but they lost in 3 tense OT's, and on a last second putback.

Would it not be sweet times for Coach Henley to go back to the Championship game but instead of the heartbreak he suffered as a player lead his Holems team to the title twenty five years later! I do find it ironic that on the twenty fifth anniversary of that Henley has his chance. Some times things are just destined to be!
