And to you I give a gigantic thank you. your thoughts are most appreciated. First, those on here that have lambasted Bellevue need to get a dose of reality. Bellevue did absolutely NOTHING wrong. They played by EXACTLY the same rules that Highlands, NewCath and everyone else in the District and for the first time in 9 years and the second in 22 years got a favorable draw. Seems to me another district did exactly that same thing.

And yes, it was an absolute thrill to play in that game. Were the Tigers outmatched? Absolutely. Just like nearly every other team that has played the Bulldogs has been. The Bellevue kids need make no apologies to anyone, least of all to anyone on here, for doing what they were asked to do in order to participate in this great experience. Getting the chance to measure yourself against one of the very best teams in the state is not an everyday occurance for most small public schools and those kids relished that chance.

 

Two side notes - CovCath Coach Mike Listerman made it a point to come ouitside our locker room and congratulate us and let us know that we earned our opportunity to be there and deserved to be there. First REAL basketball guy to do that since the District tournament. Mike is first class all the way and always will be in my book.

 

Second - Coach Henly and the rest of the Holmes staff are nothing but class, class, class and his kids reflect that. They showed us utmost respect and we really enjoyed the opportunity to play them.

 

I was very happy to see a different team in the regions. I have a nephew who plays football and basketball for Bellevue, I have been to many Bellevue football games and I am a fan. I felt bad because they did draw Holmes. After a few nerves were gone Bellevue started to shoot the rock. Good luck in the future Bellevue, hope to see you guys again!!! :ylsuper:

I was reading in the paper this morning that Bellevue has only been to the Regional tournament 2 times in the last 25 years. That's a shame. It got me to somewhat change my thinking on seeding. It's a thrill to play in the Regional tournament and there's really not a very good chance that a small school can even get there, much less win it. Then again why can't we just have 3 divisions.

 

Vories was incorrect. The Tigers have made it to the regional tournament 4 times in the last 21 yrs. I know because I was on the 87' and 89' teams that went. The 87' season was very similar to this season. We drew Dayton in the opposite bracket and beat them at the buzzer to go play NCC who was #1 in the Region. Then in the Regional out at Conner drew CovCath with Kennedy/Harris/Gribben/Tranter maybe?,not sure but it was not close and the Cov cath Crazies were in full force. In 89' it was more respectable. Bellevue beat NCC in the opposite bracket and played Holmes in the District Final. They played Scott in the Regional and lost by 10 or so I think. Scott went on to win the Region that year with a phenomenal Frosh in Chris Haynes who dunked on Holy Cross in the final. I will never forget that picture in the paper that year of him dunking.

 

I think in 1999 the Tigers had Lenny Bays possibly and they lost in the 1st round. The last time the Tigers won a REgional game was in the mid 70's with Steve Ridder when they knocked off Highlands.

I agree. First play of the game was a back door lob that R. Johnson threw down for an alley oop dunk. Also with Bellevue sitting back in a zone it allowed Holmes to crash the boards, hence a lot of second and third chance points.

 

If anything, Bellevue playing a zone helped out Holmes. It allowed them to drive and dish for a lot of back door lay ups and dunks.

Okay IF you saw the game you know it was 16 - 9 with 3:58 to go in the half. Then Holmes went on a huge run benefitted by the Holmes defense and great pressure not execution in the half court:fire:. Why ask questions like that? When Bellevue was able to keep Holmes in a half court offense Holmes took 25 - 35 seconds each trip before shooting. If you look at my post as a whole it states that Holmes used pressure defense to score quickly when forced to play in the half court did not score quickly.

I doubt that Bellevue's zone "helped Holmes." They did not need much help. The zone at least forced Holmes to run some clock on several possessions. So I think the coaches had the right game plan as far as packing it in. Now my post also said Holmes had several 3 and 4 shot possessions which is the downfall of any zone especially when you can't match up at all.

Why try and confuse these "gentlemen" with facts when all they're concerned with is how many dunks there were and doing their best to discredit kids who don't deserve that kind of treatment. Congrats Holmes Bulldogs on a great performance and congrats Bellevue on making the tournament. Everything else is just lip service.

WHen Bellevue cut the lead to 16-9, Holmes had no starters on the floor. As soon as he brought Henderson, R. Johnson, and Avery back in that's when they went on their run and got up big. I agree that Bellevue did force Holmes to take time off the clock but they still scored pretty much at will against that 1-3-1 zone.

Their 3 and 4 shot possessions came becuase playing in a zone it allowed Holmes to crash the boards with nobody on them which as you stated is the downfall to playing a zone against them.

No Lenny Bays, but they did have Mike Gullett, and he was very very good.

Anyone that thinks Bellevue's zone was causing Holmes problems is kidding themselves. First of all, just to clarify, I am fairly sure it was never 16-9, it was 18-9. Then Arrez came in and it was over. And if you think that Holmes was actually playing their best offense and not looking for a couple of big plays then you are again, kidding yourself. Holmes guys were a class act, but they knew they could win this game had they spotted Bellevue 20 to begin with. The only reason it was ever close was because Holmes sometimes tended to just stand around against the zone. When they actually cut and moved they got lay ups and dunks.
