I have to re-register for my voting privilages because I moved. Should I re-register as an Independent? Or should register as a Democrat or Republican. I am in no way in 100% agreement with either party, and feel philisophically opposed to aligning myself with either, which is why I registered as an Independent. However, the one "downside" is that I can't usually vote in the primary.

 

So....what do you think, and why?

You should register however you will have the most impact on elections. If you live in a heavily Democratic or heavily Republican area, then register with the majority of your neighbors. If you live in a relatively balanced area, vote with the party that best reflects your values, which I am guessing is the Democratic Party.

Registration only matters in the Primaries anyway. Ususally the Democratic primaries are the only ones that matter...just a suggestion:D

Registering as an Independent looks nice on BGP or as a protest but serves no practical function. Once the general election gets here one is free to vote for the candidate of one's choice regardless of party affiliation. Pick a party and take part in the process of selecting a nominee.

If Kentucky was one of those states where you could vote in either primary, I'd reccomend that Rmom register Independent. But for the reason 3TL gives, I think she should register Democrat.

Selecting a party so you can voted doesn't commit you to anything. It just allows you to vote in the primaries. It's not like they publish a list in the newspaper of political registrations. But it will make it easier when me and my fascist brothers take over to hunt down all the liberals.

I really wish all local elections were non-partisan so that registration wouldn't be such an issue. It's a no-win situation, so I didn't vote in your poll.:irked:

So...what I'm getting is that I should choose one of the big 2, so that I can vote in the primary. But, then I'm counted as one of the big 2's registered voters in Kentucky, which is used for leverage, and I really don't want to give either of them even my passive support. Shamrock fan, I wish they were as well. I think it really probably hurts voter turnout in some areas of Kentucky.

You would have had no problem pulling the lever for John Edwards the past two elections. That alone would get you by for 8 years.

 

As I said, you can tell everyone you're an Independent or you can participate in the process.

I think that all of the brightest, best educated, deepest thinking, most caring and all around best people are Democrats, so I'd register that way.;)
