February 26, 200818 yr Is it any team not in one of the top 6 conferences? Are there low-major teams/conferences?
February 26, 200818 yr I may be wrong, but I think it is anyone not in a power conference(BCS). I maybe wrong though.
February 26, 200818 yr I definitely think you can rank the conferences in their "majorness". For example, the A10 is a mid major, but a high mid major. On the other hand, the OVC is about as bad as it gets and could be considered a low major.
February 26, 200818 yr In terms of leagues, it is anyone outside the big 6. Teams can rise above the label from those conferences with sustained major performance. Memphis, Gonzaga and X are examples of majors playing in a mid major league...

Again, I'm not trying to bring this debate over into this thread, but I just don't believe you can lump X in with those other two. I doubt many outside of this area would do that.

I doubt many outside of this area would do that. Which shows you know little to nothing about X. They were the only non BCS school to make the Forbes list of the top 20 most valuable mens hoops programs. I'm the farthest thing in the world from an X fan, but they belong in the major category...

X in the NCAA finishes 1961 First Round 1983 First Round 1986 First Round 1987 Second Round 1988 First Round 1989 First Round 1990 Sweet Sixteen 1991 Second Round 1993 Second Round 1995 First Round 1997 Second Round 1998 First Round 2001 First Round 2002 Second Round 2003 Second Round 2004 Elite Eight 2006 First Round 2007 Second Round I'm sorry, but that doesn't make a major program, no matter how "valuable" it is.

Then you don't see Gonzaga as a major as well. Can't have it both ways...
February 26, 200818 yr Author I may be wrong, but I think it is anyone not in a power conference(BCS). I maybe wrong though. That is what I have always considered it. But that brings me to the next question, why the name "Mid" Major if there is not a lower version (i.e. Low Major)? I would like to punch the moron that coined that phrase.
February 26, 200818 yr Then you don't see Gonzaga as a major as well. Can't have it both ways... I see Gonzaga as more successful over the last decade than X, but they're still a mid major. The Zags haven't missed the tournament since 98, whereas X has missed 3 times in the same span. Now that probably lends itself to the fact the A10 is a all around better conference than the WCC, but those two are still, IMO, mid-major schools.

So why did you say I can't lump X in the major group with Memphis State and Gonzaga???

Memphis, Gonzaga and X are examples of majors playing in a mid major league... That is basically it. Teams can break out but conferences can't.
