You're right. Both teams however have both had their run of team strength and talent, I just think that Male has had the better talent in these run of years. This will be a topic where whoever gets to post last wins.

Coach, I definitely think they had more talent in the "skilled" positions, but I think X had superior talent in the trenches with Zepp, Tronzo, Jefferies, Smith, Elder, Sturgeon and superior kickers/punters. X has also had more than their fair share of running backs the last five years with KJ Austin Bruce, then Vic then Duece (and Neal and Beach coming through). I would say though that at this point, Male's grads have done better in college (Barclay setting the ACC rushing record, Bush being all-world at UL).

Probably Bernard Jackson who was on the practice squad for the Redskins, and Chip Mattingly who went to the last cut I believe with Buffalo as a long snapper, both around 2003 or 2004. Probably before them is Will Wolford.

 

As to the thread, I'm a little surprised the records are so close. I thought X was ahead, but Male's great teams keep them close. I give the edge to my Tigers because generally their schedule year in and out is stronger.

I am not as concerned about whether my son ultimately makes it to the NFL or to the MLB, but I think it is pertinent to the discussion. Sometimes I think the talent at schools like Male, Ballard, PRP, and other public schools is minimized if they lose to St. X or Trinity. Both St. X and Trinity have a great football systems in place. Yet I would greatly like to respect the talent at some of the other schools and I think it is evident by the number of players other schools have playing college football and in the NFL.

I agree X probably does have the advantage in the trenches. I got the luxury of playing against Barclay and Bush. Bush was a junior and we controlled him most of the game until the quarterback (Blackerby?) broke his leg, the Bush got to touch the ball every play and it was over with after that. We got to play both team through the years I was in high school and we always seemed to match up better against X and Male always seemed to just run passed us. This is a great topic, to bad we can never know the answer.

As a whole (this entire decade) I feel that X has been better...but at their individual year's bests....I say Male has been superior..we were fortunate enough, that Bobby got in his own way at times.

X's last guy before Bernard was probably Lee Reherman. Most of you probably know him better as Hawk from American Gladiators. Not all meathead though, the guy graduated from Cornell and has an MBA and a PhD in economics.

An irony at St. X at the moment is that there are 2 former players/students that are playing in the MLB and none in the NFL. This is, of course, a more complicated fact largely because of the strength of the football program being ranked in the top 25 in the USA Today poll last year as well recent state championships and dominance among other state schools. Byrd was a pitcher. Exceptional pitchers from this part of the country are more easily noticed than position players. The other player, Chris Burke, may have been progressed by his Dad – who coached baseball at St. X and then later at Bellarmine.
