About what I expected. I knew Coach Highfield and the players would come out ready for this game, and from what I have heard they actually played really hard in this game. Its a shame they came up a little short. Congrats to Villa on the win. I think I heard this is Villa's first time ever going to the region in boys basektball. So congrats to them and good luck in the district championship and in the region.

Wow I hope Villa doesn't draw...anyone...in the regional tournament or it could be ugly.

These aren't your daddy's Vipers!

This team will acquit themselves well on the grand stage!

The Buttels Caravan continued on Monday night as I made my way to the 34th District Tournament which is being held at Ludlow High School. I got to the game with about half of the 3rd quarter left, so what I write here is based on the scoring I got from the official book and the last bit of the game that I was able to catch.

Ludlow came out smoking to start the game, hitting 3 three pointers. Villa Madonna also had their scoring game on as they held close after the first 8 minutes trailing the Panthers by 2, 19-17.

Second quarter saw distributed scoring by Villa as 6 different players hit the scorebook, paced by Blake Bryan with 6 points. Villa outscored Ludlow 17-12 taking the lead at the half, 34-31.

The third quarter saw Ludlow wake up, most noticeably, Tyler Shelton coming off the bench and putting in all of his 11 points in during the quarter. Kyle Williamson added 7 more as Ludlow jumped back into the lead, outscoring Villa Madonna 23-14. with 8 minutes to go, the score was 54-48.

The last quarter saw Villa Madonna shut down Ludlow as with 2:25 to go in the game, Division III player of the year, Stephen Love hit a three pointer that would give Villa Madonna the lead for good at 60-59. A converted free throw by Love made it a two point game with Ludlow having possession of the ball. Ludlow came down the floor and gave the ball to Zach Stegmoeller who launched a three pointer that fell short, as Villa Madonna goes to the 9th Region Tournament for the first time in school history with the 61-59 defeat of the Ludlow Panthers

Villa Madonna goes to 15-12 on the year with the win and will take on the winner of the Lloyd Memorial-Dixie Heights game tomorrow night. Ludlow ends their season with a 9-13 record.

Scoring by Quarter:

Villa Madonna - 17 17 14 13 - 61

Ludlow - 19 12 23 5 - 59

Individual Scoring - Villa Madonna

Stephen Love - 19

Blake Bryan - 16

Brian Hamilton - 8

David Schuh - 7

Tommy Bilbo - 6

Matt Stoffer - 5

Individual Scoring - Ludlow

Kyle Williamson - 18

Tyler Shelton - 11

Zach Stegmoeller - 9

Matt Aynes - 7

Tyler Trammel - 7

Joe Gier - 6

Brett Betz - 1

Congrats to Villa. Their road definitely doesn't get any easier.

Ludlow impressed me, a very gritty team. Villa hit shots when it counted and their big time players stepped up in the end. Villa has a definite uphill road from here but, any team that can shoot is dangerous.

My only question is when will HS players stop leaving their feet to defend jump shots. It drives me crazy

Congratulations to Villa Madonna. IMO they are the most improved team this year. Good luck in the region tourney and job well done on how hard you young men have worked this year.

I heard the Love kid was the real deal although I haven't seen him play but statistically speaking he's doing it all. Any colleges looking at this kid?

Congrats to the Blue Lightning and the big victory. This is huge for their program. What happened to Ludlow this year. I know Logan is gone but I didnt see Rouse in the boxscore either. Was he with the team last night?

How about the description of Shelton in the Enquirer this morning. Crew cut, straight out of a 1950's movie.

VILLA MADONNA....WELCOME TO THE DANCE!!! Congrats to all of you...especially David Schuh!

Rouse could not have bought a bucket last night. Made plenty, but not one fell for him. Chance to win at the buzzer but the Stegmoeller 3 fell short. You can see the video of it at the link above.

Gier wasn't in the box score either, and I know he scored a bunch in the first half. Don't know if that was a typo, or what.

I agree that was a unique description of Shelton. Hope he doesn't take offense to it.

Agreed. Rouse was on target on practically all of his shots but none would fall. I dont think i've ever seen so many shots go in and out. Just one of those nights, unfortunaltely for him and the Panthers that night came at the wrong time. If he gets one three to fall instead of coming out the Panthers are still playing. But thats how things go in the world of sports.

Congrats to Villa on a hard fought game. Good luck In the district championship and in the region! :thumb:
