February 26, 200818 yr I think Johnson and Williams are asking more than what the Bengals think they are worth. Therefore, they're letting them go to free agency to let the market decide their worth.
February 26, 200818 yr How can the Bengals afford to let that happen? I think it shows the Bengals are leaning to a 3-4, which necessitates bigger LB's; he is 235 at best; Odell is only 235, but is a bigger playmaker; Brooks, Jeanty, Henderson, Jones, Schlegel are all 245+; Pollack if he comes back would be 255+. The final decision about the defense will be made after the draft. Johnson is like Smith; solid but surely not great- never approaching Pro Bowl status.
February 26, 200818 yr He won't be a backup. He has been. Why not do it last year with Steinbach, a proven starter that was a stalwart on the line? Personel decision making is not a strong suit for this organization.

February 26, 200818 yr He started 14 games last year. Andrews will be a starter next year... I understand. My point is that he is not woth the money if it was deemed Steinbach wasn't worth it.
February 26, 200818 yr I understand. My point is that he is not woth the money if it was deemed Steinbach wasn't worth it. Steinbach getting tagged would have only been a one year solution. He was not going to get long term T money here to play G. He got 7 years 50 million in Cleveland, and a long term deal for Andrews will be NO WHERE close to that. The only argument that holds water on Steinbach was letting either Levi or Willie walk and playing Eric at one of the T spots. Comparing the Andrews tag is a waste of time...

The Gals continue to make personel gafs. I would prefer to have Steinbach than Andrews any day of the week. I would have sent J. Smith packing because guess what his tag is exactly what you said Eric's would have been. One year solution, and not a very good one at that. Just look at how this team has digressed since the wonder season 2005. You now have question marks on O line. RB. WR TE (as always) D line. LBs. and as usual ST. DB may be the only area they are OK. Yes some of this is a result of injury. A lot is a result of poor decision making by management. The only way the tagging of Andrews is positive is if they ink him to a deal, and he becomes a pro bowl player. I'd be suprised if that happens. The record of this organization speaks for itself.

They obviously felt they had a lot more depth along the OL than the DL last year. One of the three top OL's was going to go, and in hindsight it's easy to say they made the wrong choice because of the injury problems. Whitworth was very good doing the things Steinbach brought to the table, so I really don't get the complaining over that decision. 50 million over 7 years is WAY too much for a position you already had replaced in house. If you want to gripe there, it's not letting one of the Ts go and moving Steinbach to that open spot...

How come Cleveland (now better than the Gals) can afford to pay Steinbach ( I'm sure Thomas is getting a boat load also) but Cincy can't? Believe me I do like Whit also.

Every team's salary cap stucture is different; that is obvious. Steinbach got overpowered by bid DT's; if Stacy ends up at Guard, that will not happen; he is bigger and stronger and just as athletic; he has more potential. Also the Bengals may think they made a mistake w/ Steinbach and do not want to let 2 good OL leave in 2 years. The bottom line is tagging Stacy Andrews makes complete sense-business and football.
