Where should I go to grad school?

Featured Replies

I need some help. I have a couple schools I'm for sure going to apply for, but would like some input from the wise minds of BGP. I'll be going for my MBA.

My list of schools thus far is:

Michigan

Boston College

Chicago

Duke

Vanderbilt

Ohio State

Xavier

Any help would be appreciated!

Have you already graduated from college?

I'm considering going to Grad school as well.

If I go, I have a few choices but I have not decided where I will go.

Have you taken the GRE? If so, how was it?

I can't comment on any others except Michigan and Duke. Both of these schools' campus' are great. Duke's is very secluded and in like a forest type area. Michigan's is more like a main street type. You probably can't go wrong with any of the schools in your list.:thumb:

BTW, where did/do you go to college? Are you from Kentucky? Is there a reason all of the colleges you listed are out of the state of Kentucky?

Also, you're major is important. Some of those schools might be much better in one field than others.

I'll pretend like I don't see Duke on your list.

It would appear that you have done well in school and on your GRE. Is that correct?

I completed my master's degree 2 years ago at UK and had to take the GRE prior to entrance. Let me tell you . . . there is really no way to "study" for it other than learning the format. The majority of the information is stuff that you either know or you don't. There are several books out there to assist you in your preparation. Some include computer assistance which is also helpful since the test (depending upon the testing location) is computerized.

The only advice I will give though is to focus your attention on the first several questions of each section as they effect your score moreso than subsequent ones. (ex: everyone starts with a score of 400 for each section, with the first couple of questions: if right you jump to a score of 500 but if wrong you drop to a 300. From there your score is adjusted by 20 points up and down based upon your accuracy).

I haven't taken the test yet....plan to over the summer.

I currently go to NKU, and want to get out of the state of Kentucky as soon as possible.

My major is accounting. I graduate after next semester. Entrance scores and GPA requirements won't be a problem.

Have you thought about an online MBA?

The GRE is the hardest test that I have ever taken. When I left the testing center I honestly thought that I did not get a single question correct. So I sucked it up and stopped by Applebee's for Happy Hour.

A few weeks later I recieved a score of 1100, I was the most relieved human on Earth.

Having received an MBA from Vanderbilt (in 1993), my biggest mistake was not getting more work experience before going back to school. I was almost 23 when I started, whereas the average age was about 27. Being "book smart" is one thing; not having worldly experience is another. I was way behind my classmates in terms of real-world experiences, particularly in the work place. I paid the price.

Vanderbilt was a decent experience for me, and I am from Nashville, so I was very familiar with the city, but looking back on the experience, my belief is, if you apply yourself in your studies and have a solid vision of your future career path (which in part can be formed by working for a few years), then there's much more bang for one's buck at less expensive universities.

Good luck.

If you are seriously considering schools like Chicago, I would suggest also looking at Penn (Wharton) and Northwestern (Kellog).

I'm in my second semester at the Community College in Maysville and am planning to major in accounting as well. And I am looking at schools to transfer to such as NKU EKU and UK. How was the program at NKU?
