February 22, 200818 yr Sampson suspended, Dan Dakich is interim coach. I'll post more when I hear it.
February 22, 200818 yr How will this affect the team, from a focus standpoint. I wouldn't want to play IU anytime soon, as they all seemed to like Coach Sampson very much.

February 22, 200818 yr Author Some bio on Dakich Dan Dakich - of course a well known name in Hoosier lore. Dakich played at Indiana from 1982-85 and served as team captain both his junior and senior seasons. Best known for his defensive job on Michael Jordan in Indiana's upset of North Carolina in the 1984 East Regionals of the NCAA tournament. Dakich then went on to spend 12 seasons on Bob Knight's staff at Indiana. That included the national title team of 1987 and Big Ten titles in 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993. Every year that he served on the IU staff the Hoosiers made it into the NCAA tournament. Dakich finally left Indiana in the spring of 1997 to take on the head coaching job at Bowling Green State University of the Mid-American Conference. He coached there for 10 years before resigning last spring. In 2002 Dakich accepted the head coaching job at West Virginia but walked away from it a week later and returned to Bowling Green. In June of last year Dakich was hired by Indiana head coach Kelvin Sampson to replace Jerry Green as Director of Basketball Operations. Then at the end of October following the resignation of assistant Rob Senderoff, Dakich was hired to take on Senderoff's open assistant position. Since then he has been known to work often with the Indiana post players including Big Ten Player of the Year favorite D.J. White.
February 22, 200818 yr :thumb: Like would be a monumental understatement. Agreed and this may make a very good team, even more closer and focused on making a serious run. Interesting to see, what Sampson will address with regards to this issue and his players. Keep us updated.
February 22, 200818 yr I think his contract stipulates that he must be suspended prior to being fired. IU was stupid to sign that contract, but it looks like they're on their way to canning him.

Interesting to see, what Sampson will address with regards to this issue and his players. Keep us updated. I will try. He's not commented on it one time since anything came out, and I seriously doubt that changes now. The reason so many fans got behind him was his willingness to embrace the fans he put himself out there was very visible and apprroachable. Thats why this one stings more. I feel betrayed. Oh well, time to move on I suppose. And I hope you're right about them coming together. :thumb: We'll see what happens.
February 22, 200818 yr Author I think his contract stipulates that he must be suspended prior to being fired. IU was stupid to sign that contract, but it looks like they're on their way to canning him. That's a clause in probably 99% of contracts signed in the past 2 years.
February 22, 200818 yr That's a clause in probably 99% of contracts signed in the past 2 years. And its fine 99% of the time. When you're hiring a guy freshly busted for NCAA violations, and still under sanctions, you would think there would be a "If you don't comply with 100% of the NCAA rules, you can be terminated immediately" clause.
February 22, 200818 yr Author Press Conference apparently being held up... Hearing they are trying to work out a buyout instead of the suspension.

When you're hiring a guy freshly busted for NCAA violations, and still under sanctions, you would think there would be a "If you don't comply with 100% of the NCAA rules, you can be terminated immediately" clause. Come on man, that's also in every contract. Unfortunately these things aren't black and white. Jim O'Brien was guilty as sin, but won his lawsuit b/c they fired him b/f he went to "trial". It's easy to say oh just get rid of him, that's just not how it works. Problem is the 90 days that IU has to go back to the NCAA. It's just like the regular justice system. Charges have been filed, the defense is mounting it's case. You can't sentence someone who hasn't gone to trial yet. Trial wouldn't be until June.
February 22, 200818 yr How would the university benefit from agreeing to a buyout versus a suspension and firing?
