Dental Insurance

Featured Replies

I just checked my totals for last year. I actually pay less than I thought for family dental. My cost last year for family dental was $77.48 while my family medical was $1139.84

These numbers tell me that King's Daughters Medical Center pays a great percentage of your family medical and dental insurance plans. These are both expensive benefits to provide.

Does that mean you are paying less than $7 per month for family dental and less than $100 per month for family medical?

You have a very generous employer!

$100 per year for family? That is really cheap! Who are you with as I'd like to forward it to our benefits department. I will say that we pay nothing for checkups, xrays, fillings etc. 50% of ortho up to $4000 is covered. 90% of root canals, caps, etc. It saved us a bundle over the last 3 years.

That is as rich a dental plan as is on the market! A 50% to $4000 orthodontic benefit is unheard of.

You are correct that KDMC pays a great percentage of our medical and dental plans. That is part of our employment package. Yes I pay $5.84 per month for dental and $87.68 a month for medical. So the above numbers I listed are actually too high. I forgot that a couple of times a year we have 3 pay periods per month, and we don't have to pay our insurance premiums when we have that 3rd paycheck.

It better be for what they are charging in premiums.

I pay $11 per check (paid every two weeks) for family. I don't have near the benefits 75center gets but I do get 2 cleanings and 1 xray per year. There really isn't anything that can happen with your teeth that would cause you to go bankrupt. No reason to pay $1200 per year for dental insurance.

There are lots of things that can happen to your teeth if they are not properly cared for. Bankruptcy is not the issue. Keeping your teeth is! Most dental policies are designed to keep you in the dentist's chair every six months to prevent disease or decay from causing someone to loose their teeth.

$1200 per year for a family of, say 5, to maintain good oral health is not an unreasonable dollar figure. Cleanings and x-rays according to a schedule typically range from $75 to $125. That is $150-$250 per family member per year if there is nothing wrong in their mouth. Add a couple of fillings, some bridge work, crowns, caps, etc. and the cash register starts rolling.

To have good oral health and a bright beautiful smile is important to most people. It comes with a cost.

What are some of hte more credible carriers? There are a few listed but I would like to know some that people are confident in.

I have looked & there are dozens but I don't know one from the other.

I don't know if Met Life offers dental insurance if it isn't offered through an employer. We've also had Delta Dental, but that was through the military.

Here seems to be the best quote that I have received.

Provider: Blue Cross & Blue Shield

Covers: 2 cleanings/check-up/x-rays per year for Free

After 6 months: pays 40-50% of fillings, etc

After 12 months: pays 40-50% of all major work

Adults: $21 per month

Children: $14 per month

I figure the cleanings would about pay for the plan, if you actually had to pay for 2 cleanings for 1 person per year.

Does anybody have any advise or experience with Blue Cross or similar coverage??

My dental card through work says its through Wells Fargo, I know that it pays %100 of anything preventative and I believe it's either 80 or 90% of restorative, pretty sure its 90%

We had Met Life through work and it was ok. We just switched to Guardian. A little cheaper for basically the same coverage.

Guardian has an excellent dental contract. Probably the best!

It isn't too bad. I pay $11 every two weeks for family and can go to any provider I want in or out of the network. For in network only it would have been $8 something every two weeks but my dentist wasn't in the network.
