Harlan County High's Coach/Staff

Featured Replies

Does anybody know what kind of staff Coach Larkey has put together for the Black Bears. Did Coach bring anyone with him? I am interested in finding out the names of his assistants. Assistants are a very big part of the program as everyone understands. Harlan Co. Bears , Blackbears08 or Scatbackskin can you help us out with some info? Youngblood or Wideopen?

There is no one from Rockcastle coming with him. I would think that coaches from the other schools may join him. I would think that he could have whoever he wanteddd.

Interesting that he didn't bring any assistants. However, with him being familiar with Harlan this probably isn't that big of a deal. I am sure the coaches from the other schools will make up most of his staff but you are talking about 20 some coaches from all three schools. It will be interesting to see who makes the cut. I am guessing he will have a staff of around 8 to 10.

This isn't college. Who was he supposed to bring along? Teaching jobs are a huge part of determining who goes where.

I heard that his sons didn't want to move and I think that is also the case with the other assistant coaches from Rockcastle. However I am not sure about his sons. It is possible they may change their minds. Coach Saylor IMO would not leave Rockcastle but if he would it would be with Coach Larkey but I don't see him going anywhere.

It will be a great coaching staff when it has been decided. Coach Saylor couldn't leave Rock but would in a minute if he could. The two sons would love to and one of them may join him if things work out.

I hope you know something that I don't. He has been coaching/teaching for over 20 years now. He could retire very soon and stay on his farm if he wanted to.

There were only 5 assistant coaches at Rock.

All of them are well established there also and one of Coach Larkey's biggest things at Rock was hiring within all the time. All of his assistant coaches played under him or played there at one time. One of the assistants was promoted to HC, so that left 4 and another assistant in nearing retirement and has no reason to move, that leaves 3. Two of them are his sons and I'm sure they would be in Harlan with him in a flash if their jobs permitted it.

Inside joke, I guess you didn't get it.:p

I know Coach Larkey would be glad to have one or both of his sons with him and if it works out that way it will be Harlan 's Gain and Rock loss. You really can't blame them if they go. Either way who ever ends up as assistants under Coach Larkey wil do a good job. He won't put up with anything less. He did not build a program at Rock by letting assistants not be capable of their responsibilities.

Teaching jobs will be the issue. From what I have been told his staff will mainly be made up of current Harlan BOE employees.

I would think that would be more than sufficient. There are some good football minds already there.

They are going to have to bring on board some, if not all of the coaches from the other programs. This is a tricky move bringing all the schools together and they are going to have to show some unity.
