I'm sure he is human like most everyone else, but I do think he has in the past ,( based on his military record and being a POW ) had more of a dose of reality than the other candidates.

I think calling this a scandal at this point is premature. So far, "hatchet job" seems like a far better fit. Eight years ago a few campaign staffers decided that having an attractive lobbyist seen near McCain might raise some eyebrows. Both McCain and the lobbyist denied being romantically involved and the NYT found no witnesses who claimed otherwise.

 

Unless the New York Times has more facts, everybody should condemn the newspaper and the other media outlets who participated in this smear campaign.

 

The fact that McCain has far more registered lobbyists on his campaign staff than any other candidate, including those who have already withdrawn, is a legitimate issue. Speculation on what might or might not have happened eight years ago is not.

As I have said in other threads, the mainstream media has plenty of ammunition to use against McCain. This story is a pretty weak opening volley, IMO. Republican party chiefs should have insisted that McCain come clean on this matter back in December when Drudge first reported that McCain was trying to suppress or delay the publication of the article.

 

The media has done McCain and the Republicans no favors by giving McCain the kid glove treatment through most of the primary season. The fact that Romney was the only candidate willing to take on McCain on his positions will also come back to haunt Republicans in November.

When Republicans field strong candidates, they can overcome a registration deficit. Democrats have also helped by nominating far left candidates so often. This election will pit an extremely liberal Democrat against a weak moderate Republican, IMO. Republican turnout has been disappointing in the primaries compared to turnout by the Democrats.

McCain has been paying Bob Bennett to try to suppress the story since at least late December. If McCain released the story to give him a chance to beat up on the NYT, I question his sanity.

The Clinton camp will dig up or make up something on Obama real soon................they won't go quitely.
