Great to hear that "Boomer" Gallichio is helping with the Wildcats. Great kid that has developed into a fine young man! Knows the game of football and was a great QB for Highlands..."back in the day"! Plus, I believe he's one of "Newport's finest"!

Oden was at practice the other day. I talk to a few of the boys on the team after practice an they was glad to have him back, they said he would be a great help to the team, so I think that is all that matters as long as the team is ok with him coming back out this year.

Oden is a good kid overall. Last season he just showed a lot of immaturity. His main concern was his own personal stats and not the team as a whole. But I myself IMO -- when a kid quits at this level of the game -- the road to come back should not be an easy one. Now don't get me wrong -- if there is a family issue or some issue that can justify their actions then I could work with that. But to quit because you're not getting to do something that you feel you should is just plain immature. Face it -- these young men or exactly that -- "YOUNG MEN" -- time to start acting like it! Sorry to go on about this -- but this is just one area that really burns me -- I'm sorry I just don't like it when someone quits for that reason and / or similar. I've been coaching kids in all areas of sports and one thing I constantly preach to them is this -- you always give it your best, never give up, always a better day ahead, and always remember you never quit -- never -- you just keep going and be a team here and forever. That's my rules to my teams. I've had kids quit on my teams and if it was for a reason that was not jusifiable -- they never make back on my team. IMO -- thats life itself -- I remind them of this -- do you honestly think in today's age that if you don't like how things are for you at work that you can quit and come back at your rules. Hey Einstien 70 -- sorry to bust your chops on this -- but this is just my opinion and I beleive in teaching young men and kids that you have to work for everything you get -- nothing in life should be handed to you -- I teach my children these same rules -- and my oldest always works his butt off and yes he's not gotten his rewards like some kids that just show up and a coach basically falls in love with what they think is the savior of the program and then gets burned by that kid because that kid isn't a young man but a immature kid that will learn life the hard way. But -- ok I'm done preaching here so I will step down off my soap box -- but keey the faith the program is about to get better -- pass (3) freshmen teams are winners and the house is slowly getting cleaned up so if the cleaning goes well -- Newport will be in the hunt this year.

I attended the Newport practice Thursday and found that the kids were pretty focused and the coaches were not wasting a bunch of time on useless X's and O's but rather on fundamentals. The O-line was practicing fundamentals and getting after each other in drills, the wideouts were working on get offs and the first step, the RB's were working on ball protection and hitting the hole. This is definately the plus I see of Newport of how they are wisely using spring ball

I stopped by for awhile myself. It was good to seen them working on the basics. Spring football is the time to work on basics but then again IMO - should spent over half of practice working on the basics. The basics are what keep you prepare. Hey maybe I'll see you at a practice soon.

IMO - Newport needs to start teaching these young men what a team is about. -- If a young man quits then shame on him. -- Don't welcome him back with open arms -- that young man needs to earn the respect of his fellow players and I just don't see Oden doing that. He's a good kid but IMO he quit his team, school and fellow players last season so it's his turn to earn their respect. I wish him luck with this coming season. But he really needs to get the respect of his fellow team mates.

 

There's a lot of young men on Newport's team that have been through the good season and the bad season of last year. Those young men didn't quit. Those young men stuck it out and decided that as a team they would be ready for this up coming season. I respect Newport's coaching staff -- Coach Hyder is a great person and a pleasure to talk to. I know he will do his best to get Newport back to the top of their class.

Scott is an excellent coach. He has been coaching for over 10 years now and he has more than enough Quality coaching experiance. He played for an awsome coach (Tom Duffy-Highlands, he was the starting Nose Tackle for the 1989 State Championship Team) and has coached under good football coaches at Newport (Roy Lucas, Mark Goetz, John Schlarman, Jim Hyder).

 

Partin (who was a teammate of mine in both High School and College) has enough football in him for the makings of an excellent coach. He is an excellent fundamentals teacher and a good positive person to have around the kids.

 

Pompillio (who was also a teammate of mine in high school) is not either the manager (that is Dennis Brewer) or the trainer (I have no idea who that is now, most schools like Newport change trainers like they do underwear). Pompillio is also a qualified individual who is excellent around the kids. Why in the heck would you want to put him down at the middle school. Pompillio also had an excellent career as a player, you just didn't hear about him because he played on a star filled team.

 

All three individuals are excellent teachers of the Fundamentals, the most important coaching aspect of football at any level. You can throw the X's and O's out the window. I am going into my seventh year of coaching and I have learned that you just adjust the X's and O's according to the players you got, you cannot adjust talent and the basic fundamentals.

 

Scott will teach the linebackers to get off blocks and tackle. Partin will teach the Running Backs to run hard and not fumble, Pompillio will teach the Wide Outs to get a great get-off, run a great route and catch the ball, and they will teach the DB's to cover and make a play on the ball. There may be times were the players do not do what they were taught, but they will coach all of them very well and make the players reach their full potential.

I agree with you on everything. Currently IMO the freshmen staff that Newport (basically Pic and Church) have put together is by far IMO one of the top 5 in this area. Partin is a great coach, my sons attended camp at Thomas More and had Partin as an instructor. Meyers is a mad man, he's great to watch coach. Meyers really gets into it. He teaches all the basics. Pomp, I like Pomp and I see him as still in the learning process of coaching. IMO - Pomp needs to contnue his coaching of the basics but he needs to remember that there is a lot of talent there and not favor any one player. That's just my opinion. Overall, if I needed a person that can pump up a group of young men then Pomp is my man. Now if there's a guy that I feel is a great linemen coach that would be Ritter. Ritter knows his stuff. But overall I like all of these guys and respect their ability and knowledge. Good luck to all of them.

Just because you may have played a couple years of football, does'nt mean you can coach. IMO the players have no respect for these coaches, they are negative and they can not relate to the kids. Unlike disciplined and sturdy successful men coaches such as Pic and Upchurch could be just what the Cat need to get them where they want to be. No direspect to anyone IMO you have to make moves like this for the better of your program.

Pomp will be OK. I made the same mistakes in handling players when I first started. You learn so much after your first year and you only become a better coach every year after. I would not mind my son playing for any of these gentleman anytime. I know he will be both well coached and treated fairly:thumb:

I hope you're right, like I said before I like Pomp. Pomp is a great person and he means well, I know I too would let my son play also. I know the aspects of coaching , I learned a lot after my first year coaching. I guess thats why I so much about teaching these young men about not quitting. IMO - I personally feel if they quit, then make them work three times harder to prove to me (the coach) and the players that they really want to be there. No favors!
