Because if they have fewer teams it means they have more big schools. That makes it harder to win in March, so it's only fair they have it a little easier in January. Plus, a team should not be in Region 4 in March and Region 3 for the All "A Classic. If you are a Region 3 school you should be a Region 3 school for everything.

The All A Classic is a separate entity from the KHSAA, so why should they have to abide by KHSAA guidelines when it comes to regions?

 

Let's face it ... the KHSAA regions aren't all the same in terms of population or geographic area. They are set up so that each region has roughly the same number of teams. Why can't the All A Classic take a similar approach?

Did the All "A" organizers already announce the 125 teams for next year? If so, where is this list at. Do they go up the list if one of the lower team elect not to play in the All "A"?

I am not sure how I would fix it, but something needs to be done. There is too many schools getting in that shouldn't be. I'd use something close to the Football alignment with classes. This small school tournament is starting to get too big and before you know it the purpose of this tournament will be lost.

I heard Steidel talking about this on ICN. But, really, if you're going to use a set number for the number of schools participating, why not make it 128 instead of 125? It makes the brackets a lot simpler, and you don't have to worry about 3 teams getting a first round bye.

When the All A went statewide nearly 20 years ago, there wasn't as much of a disparity in the number of schools in each region. Consolidation has created some of that, not to mention the closing and/or lack of participation by some private schools in Louisville.

I love the All "A" Classic. I think that it saved the entire state from going to a class system by giving a lot of the little guys a chance. However.... I would like to see a few changes. 125 schools is close to half of all schools that participate in basketball in the state. That is almost too many. Also the regions are terribly unbalanced. Some regions have as few as 3-5 teams, while others have 10-12. With that many schools, the unbalanced regions and the inclusion of some of the dominate private schools, it makes it very difficult for the small rural schools to compete. I think the tournament was originally designed to give small schools an opportunity to compete for a state title that they might not ever have a chance competing against all schools. I think that those intentions were great, but it strains the credibility of the tournament when a team like UHA with their 40 students have one almost half the titles.

So lets kick out from the tournament some of the schools that started The All "A" Classic. Now that's real fair!

In the first year of the tournament, most of the seven Muhlenberg County schools (pre-consolidation) were in it ... Greenville won it the first year.

 

And I've advocated this for years, especially the Louisville merger ... I'm surprised we haven't discussed it in the past.

OK, so they had four or five teams since the second year of the tournament. Muhlenberg North and Muhlenberg South opened in 1990.

That seems fair, lets punish all schools for something that only relates to a few schools. To ban all private schools would cause more harm than good. I can think of quite a few 9th and 10th region private schools that do the right thing and the All "A" will most likely be their only chance at ever claming a state championship in basketball. I am sure there are other regions that have private schools doing the right thing. (I just am not familiar with the other regions)

 

If the All "A" committee has a problem with certain schools that may walk a fine line when it come to the rules then let them take it up with the school. If they do not have any problem with them then I do not see why the rest of us should. The last time I checked it is their tournament to run. If you don't like it then do like they did and start your own tourny. Maybe you could call it the "Small Public School Tourny" and in 20 years you might have something as successful as the "All A Classic"
