Aaaaah, Ron Steele got lucky!! Had to say that, hell of a game though.

I will agree that the 94 Male team with Redman, Ibn Green, Tony Driver, Hackett, etc, might be the best Male team ever, certainly the best Male team not to win a Championship. Undefeated until championship game with 8 games over 50 points, 5 shutouts, etc.

 

X beat Male in the second or third round. Trinity beat Boone County in the State Finals.

1959 Manual is considered the state's best ever.

1938 Manual team finished 10-0. Scored 456 points and gave up only 58. Only 13 of those points came to KY teams. Only one team was within three touchdowns of them. The '59 Manual team had two tough games that year against Trinity and Flaget. Only close game the '38 team had was against a team from CT.

1959 Manual is considered the state's best ever.

 

ahhh....by who....hardly anyone on here can verify they saw that team...they may have been good for then, but there has been better teams since then.

My 8th grade football coach was a member of the 1959 Manual team and he has told me about all of the great players on it. I can't remember all of them but I recall that something like 14 or 15 of them were major college football players and that two of them ended up as captains of their college (Big Ten) teams. Also, several of them played in the NFL. No other Louisville high school team that I have heard about had as much talent as that one.

 

The only teams that I saw in person with loads of college talent and that won a State title were the 2000 Male Bulldogs and the 1977 Shamrocks.

Put me in the column for the 1959 Manual team as Louisville's all-time best. I've seen an awful lot of high school teams over the years, but none as good as that bunch. Sherman Lewis (RB), Paul McPherson (RB), Steve Wright (OT), and Pete Dudegon © all went on to have fantastic college careers as well at Michigan State, Arkansas A&M, Alabama, and Purdue, respectively. :ylsuper:

I was 8 years old when my dad took me to see them play St.X and all I remember is that Manual won big and had some very long runs all night.

2002 - Trinity, is the best team that I have ever seen play in KY.

Gary Gray (who was once a rider at the old Louisville Downs) was a role player on that 59 team - played at LSU.

Trinity's 76 Champs were great! They had 9 shutouts and only allowed 29 points in 13 games until they met a great Henderson County team for the only State Championship held in Lexington's Commonwealth Stadium, where Trinity won 28-24 which happened to be the halftime score.

WOW! That sounds like a great team! I was only a one year old, so I couldn't enjoy that game.

Saw the TJ team, and they were very good, but what about the TJ team with Northington, Thomas, Gathright, Redmond, etc?

In respect to their opponents, the 1959 Manual team was the best. Obviously with time comes better coaches and players, so a number of teams in the past 50 years could have beaten them if there was some sort of vortex that allowed all teams of all time to play each other.

 

But the best team I ever saw/played against was 2002 Male. And since 2002 Trinity beat them, then ding-ding-ding we have a winner.

I think Redman was a senior on the 65 TJ team, thier 2nd year of football. They weren't a "powerhouse" yet, but that team went 9-1 and it wouldn't be long in coming before TJ played for a couple of State Titles. Bobby's senior year TJ team only lost one game, to eventual State Champ Seneca by a single point.
