February 16, 200818 yr The Infamous Last Words thread brought to mind some of my favorite classic novels. Here are my top 5: Les Miserables - Hugo Of Human Bondage - Maugham Great Expectations - Dickens East of Eden - Steinbeck The Lord of the Rings - Tolkein What are some of yours?
February 16, 200818 yr A Tree Grows in Brooklyn Diary of Anne Frank The Yearling A Tale of Two Cities Last of the Mohicans Red Badge of Courage The Series of Novels by John Jakes that begins with a novel whose title is a word filter violation. Those are a few off the top of my head....I can come up with a library full, though. Great topic, LCB! I love to read!
February 16, 200818 yr Catch-22 A Tale of Two Cities Catcher in the Rye Franny and Zoey Brave New World We A Clockwork Orange Inherit the Wind 1984
February 16, 200818 yr "Slaughterhouse Five" "All The King's Men" "The Sun Also Rises" "Crime and Punishment" "Hell's Angels"
February 16, 200818 yr I'm a slacker when it comes to novel reading. I was really into short stories though--must've had ADD. A few that come to mind: Tom Sawyer The Shining Red Badge of Courage (Swiped from RM's list.) 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Moby Dick Lord of the Flies The Sun Also Rises To Kill a Mockingbird
February 16, 200818 yr More from me: Lord of the Flies The Boys from Brazil Exodus Mila 18 Trinity Redemption (OK...anything by Leon Uris)
February 16, 200818 yr Author My second 5: The Time Machine - Wells The Mayor of Casterbridge - Hardy The Mysterious Island - Verne House of Seven Gables - Hawthorne A Farewell to Arms - Hemingway
February 16, 200818 yr Author From the above, I also really like Lord of the Flies and Slaughterhouse 5. Good novel, but I was "made" to read it in senior English in high school. Somehow reading is just not as satisfying when done for a class assignment.
February 16, 200818 yr The Tempest - Shakespeare Utopia - Thomas More Ivanhoe - Scott Treasure Island - Stevenson Robinson Crusoe - Defoe The Illiad - Homer The Odyssey - Homer The Hobbit - Tolkien The Lord of the Rings - Tolkien Paradise Lost - Milton The Last of the Mohicans - Cooper Call of the Wild - London Oliver Twist - Dickens The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Twain
February 16, 200818 yr I was "made" to read a lot of things too. I was never upset, though, as reading is one of my passions. I loved the assigned books. But...I wasn't exactly miss "social" either.
February 16, 200818 yr The Hobbit Lord of the Rings Of Mice and Men Lord of the Flies I just started reading Watership Down and I like it pretty good so far. Otherwise most "classic" novels bore the daylights out of me. The Great Gatsby, Brave New World, Wuthering Heights, etc... perhaps it was because we had to read them for school and that automatically made them lamer. But I had to read Lord of the Flies and Of Mice and Men for school but I liked them good enough so that kind of ruins my theory.
February 16, 200818 yr Good novel, but I was "made" to read it in senior English in high school. Somehow reading is just not as satisfying when done for a class assignment. Some novels that I have been forced to read I like, but others I hated (such as one of your favorites, Great Expectations).
