Morgan Lubbe from Dixie is a freshman starting varsity and having some 20 pt games. She is going to be a great player.

Played mostly with 7th and 8th graders. Dixon

:thumb:Walton has a lot of very good talent in the middle school age bracket and should be fun to watch in the years to come if they get their coaching situation resolved one way or the other..

Not much is expected out of these 8th graders and freshmen at this stage so there is a lot less pressure because mistakes are expected, allowed, and it's a lot more "fun". When they become the "focus", and winning-n-losing means everything, their mentality will be put to the test and some will walk away.

 

Just within the past year in NKY, look how many reputable programs/players are hit with unfortunate events that were "completely" unexpected. I'm sure there are many more, but below are just a few that come to mind that impacted their respective programs Big-Time and changed their teams entire outlook. Many stood out as 8th graders and freshmen.

 

NCC - lost Senior starter. Cundiff has dealt with an injury almost all season.

SK - Two key starters out with knee injuries.

ND - Two key starters impacted by knee injuries.

HC - one key starter (transfer).

BC - Three key starters (1 transfer, 1 for VB) and another out with an injury.

Highlands - lost a key senior last season with a knee injury.

Ryle - one starter, perhaps two, out for the season.

Conner - two starters (1 transfer & 1 left the team).

Newport - Tamara Sneed, #1 player in the region last year, decided not to play.

 

I remember the 3 player's BC lost this season were key impact freshmen when they won the 9th region 2yrs ago. The expectations this season were huge with those 3 player's, plus Bradley & Behrens. Boone went from heads above to the middle of the pack overnight.

 

I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of player's, but these immediately came to mind. Things will surely change...guaranteed!...but it is interesting to discuss.

Ryle gets my consesus #1 in Frosh BB this year. They absolutely dominated HHS all three meetings. From what I witnessed this year in NKY Frosh ball as a whole I would rank the top three as follows. Ryle way at the top and then HHS, Walton Verona.

Walton has a couple of nice guards to go with Dixon. Doesn't the Cheeseman girl's dad coach Freshmen at Ryle. If that is the case, does she go to Ryle instead od WV? That would have to help out Ryle some.

Carroll County Freshman team..I know we usually do not include them with NKY but they have no home so I will. They won the 31st District championship 2 years in a row. (one year as 8th graders the next year as freshman) They have a good core of Freshman and some strong 8th graders. One Freshman starts Varsity and both an 8th grader and another Fresh see significant Varsity playing time.

 

I think there are some very talented young girls in the area this year. I wish I had the opportunity to see more of the games. I am defintely looking forward to watching all of these teams in the coming years, It should be very good basketball.

Doing a spin-off of an earlier thread that talked about Freshman teams. Some were commenting on the players themselves. I have noticed that NKY varsity teams are loaded with talented 8th/fresh/soph players. Don't know why and if the rest of the state is the same, but it would appear that this bodes well for the future of NKY. Maybe a state title in the not too distant future.

 

Who was the last girls nky team to win state? And how hard will it be for a NKY school to win the sweet sixteen?

Don't know the answer to either. Just seems as though the talent level in NKY has gone up in recent years with the younger players playing key roles. Used to be you had 1 or maybe 2 good players per team. Now you've got teams (BC, SK, NDA, CONNER, HHS,) that have strong players 1 thru 5 with a few more on the bench. Teams like Ryle, HC, NCC, WV are catching up. Fun to watch when that many teams have a lot of talent and good coaching.

I would bet the opening of Cooper High will effect the distribution of talent, at least at Ryle and Conner where the bulk of the players will come from.

Lay can handle the ball well, and has the ability to drive to the basket and finish well for a young girl. A very good freshmen and agree with your statement, I would be bringing her up to the next level to at least sit, and practice with the varsity girls. It could only improve her skills late on down the road.
