February 15, 200818 yr They are discussing Chad on NFL Live right now. They are having the same argument that we keep having on here. One guy is saying Chad is a distraction now, and taking away from the team. While Sean Salisbury is saying that put a little show sometime, but the Bengals would be crazy to trade him. I really liked how he said Chad was not the main reason for why the Bengals were losing like a lot of you all try to say. He said that there are atleast 100 other reasons ahead of Johnson for why the Bengals are losing. Which I have said a few times on here, and I think he is completely right. That is the reason why I had defended him all season, because it was crazy during the season how a lot of you all kept trying to put most of the blame on him for why they were losing. I know I find it funny that some people think we should trade him, because we have Chris Henry. I mean some of you all want to trust a guy who is only one mistake away from never playing again? A guy who also has not shown that if he would get doubled team every week like Chad, if he would be able to do good still? I think its time people to realize that we need Chad here, and he is really not the problem for why they are losing. It was all this talk that helped get Chad mad, and not want to be here anymore. Puting all the blame on him was crazy.
February 15, 200818 yr The Bengals hands are almost tied. They keep him and deal with a problem child or they deal him which leads to losing one of the most productive WR's in the league+ 8 Million $$ cap hit! I'd try to deal him to Dallas getting a higher draft pick+Barber. I'd then swap Barber or Rudi to the Lions + my draft pick for R. Willimas and their draft pick. That would give me R. Williams and one of the top pass rushers in the draft. Willimas will not be in Det much longer IMO. I wouldn't be suprised to see him go to San Fran. Ha I must say that is a nice fantasy, but would never happen. All this trading is stuff you don't see much in football, its not like baseball where something like this could happen. And well besides why would Dallas make that trade, they got a pretty decent group of receivers there already and have a great Tight End.
February 15, 200818 yr I know, just having a little fun:) I would like to see them go after Roy Willimas if they lose Chad. I could handle getting a 1st round pick for him and working out something for Williams. The Lions are moving to a power run game which means they need to move one of their big WR's. They pretty much put themselves in a bind when the drafted Calvin.
February 15, 200818 yr I find it somewhat odd that the decision was made to front load his contract. Seems like most contracts are end loaded. Anybody know the reasoning? It was possibly done like this to balance out the salary cap, so they didn't have a bunch of guys with end loaded contracts that ballooned around the same time. Just a thought.

Puting all the blame on him was crazy. Did all of this basically mean Chad isn't a distraction, he's not the reason they lost, and that you want him here next year? He may not be the reason they lost, but he sure didn't help them win enough.
February 15, 200818 yr Here is another question that I need to know the answer. Why is there a cap penalty for trading a player? I have always known that there was in most cases, but never understood the reasoning.

He may not be the reason they lost, but he sure didn't help them win enough. No. I believe the whole distraction thing is a bunch of crap. If an NFL player can't concentrate about doing his job, just because another player is celebrating, then that is a problem. All it is is just an excuse people could try to use for their own poor performance. The only thing I can see that could be a distraction while out on that field, is if you just lost a loved one, or if there is something seriously wrong with someone you care about. Other than that, I believe all the distraction stuff is a bunch of crap. The same with other off the field stuff. Like if someone gets a DUI during the week, and then people try to say well that had the team distracted, that is just stupid IMO. There is no way something like that distracts someone while playing football. Also 96 catches and 1400 yards receiving this past year and finishing in the top 5 in the whole NFL in receiving yards shows that he did a lot to try to help them win. Not to mention I believe 4 straight years of leading the conference in receiving yards before this year. I mean the guy might not do things the normal way, but when he is on the field he is one of the best WR's in football, and is not even close to being the main reason for why the Bengals lost this year, or any other year. It is just a convient excuse for people to try to use, instead of admitting to the fact that it had to do with other players and coaches not producing and doing their jobs right. I mean I not saying he is perfect, because he does make mistakes, like that drop against Buffalo. However the whole blaming the losing on Chad Johnson during the season was just crazy.

February 15, 200818 yr Here is another question that I need to know the answer. Why is there a cap penalty for trading a player? I have always known that there was in most cases, but never understood the reasoning. I believe it deals with the bonus money. Even though they are traded, the team is still responsible for the bonus money owed to the player.
February 15, 200818 yr Here is another question that I need to know the answer. Why is there a cap penalty for trading a player? I have always known that there was in most cases, but never understood the reasoning. It is not a penalty; the signing bonus money is just pro-rated over the time the player actually played for that team. The Bengals redid Chad's contract in '06 and game him a huge signing bonus that is pro-rated over the life of the contract, as long as he is still playing. If they trade him that lump sum gets squeezed into the one-two years he played for the Bengals under that contract. If they wait until after June 1st to trade him, it gets split into one more year, which would ease the cap hit.

Chad was not a distraction during the season; he was when he started running his mouth at the Super Bowl and on the radio. The Bengals will not trade him before June 1st(or at all probably). If they would trade him, they wouldn't get the same numbers at the WR position, but they could be a better team (see the NY Giants-minus Shockey and Barber). I wish he would shut up already; he dropped balls in clutch situations and ran routes that Carson thought was wrong. He is not as great as he claims to be, and plenty of great players played like professionals without so much as a "peep."
