His point was on whether you meant fiscal conservative. He said you meant full, fiscal and social conservative. And then you indicated that. He replied with he was right about what you were thinking.

i know what he meant. I think that the he to whom he referred is me. I actually meant CONSERVATIVE (as opposed to conservative or Conservative), so he was not right on either count.

I think the person has to be from the South, though. He cannot afford to lose ANY of the southern states to the Dem.

 

I agree that it has to be a full blown conservative but I think it has to be from the South. BUT...

 

McCain's support comes from the moderates and Independents, he cannot go overboard so much pandering to the conservatives that he loses the support he has with those 2 groups.

He should no true interest in the Presidency till South Carolina. I cannot believe that he would show any interest in the 2nd spot. If I am the lead of the ticket, his poor campaigning and strategy has to be a huge red flag to me.

This ticket is dependent on how far to the right that McCain has to move. Saw an exit poll where 33% of Evangelical voters voted for Huckabee, and 31% voted for Romney. That may mean, that the Evangelical voting bloc is not as far right as some claim.

You know another key to this race is the race itself. McCain may be the nominee by the end of February. That will give him 3 months to win over the conservatives that are balking while Obama and Hillary are still campaigning against each other and then another 3 months before the convention. Throw in the question of superdelegates and the Dems might not truly know their candidate is till the convention.

 

Let's say there is somewhere around 3600 Dem delegates without the super delegates. Each end the season around 1800 without any superdelegates being officially cast. The campaigning for them from the end of the primary season to the convention would be intense.

 

He wraps this thing up early, he could move to unite the party while the Dems are still hashing it out on who is going to be the nominee.

I agree wholeheartedly. I also think he will go for someone a tad younger. I'm not talking a mid-thirties person, but just not someone close to his age, which sort of rules out Thompson. If Obama wins the nomination, I wouldn't be surprised to see a woman.

I am not sure how conservative Gov. Crist is, but he would be an attractive choice after Crist help deliver Florida for McCain in the primary. As for a conservative whose credentials would not be questioned, former GOP Chairman Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi would be a good choice, IMO.

I don't know a ton about him, but Barbour seems like a decent pick. Very good fiscal record if I recall correctly.
