Last time a 9th Region District Final Loser won the Region?

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any stats on this? Has it happened more than we like to think and does it justify allowing both a winner and loser of a District Final into the Regional tournament.

Can anyone go back further and identify maybe a darkhorse that lost in the Districts and stole the 9th crown? What about when St. Henry won the 9th 5 or 6 yrs ago, did they win their district?

How about Geno G's Bluebirds? I'm guessing they did not win the district that year.

That season St. Henry did win the district. They beat SK right after the ALL with Mike Brock injured. Then they beat them in a classic district final game and then another classic in the Regional Final.

However in 2001 Highlands won the Region with but lost to NCC in the Championship of the 36th District by 16pts.

Thanks for the info. St. Henry had a fantastic year when they won it and Im sure those boys will never forget that trip to Rupp.

Those St. Henry/SK games were great. I remember thinking there was no way St. Henry could beat them 3 times in one year and yet they did. The ninth was pretty strong that year too (Doleman and Neltner were seniors).

When Conner won in 93 they lost the district championship to St. Henry.

Good memory. I had forgotten that. That 9th region championship game was an all-timer as far as excitement.

Well it looks like it happens pretty often. So does that justify a dist loser moving on. Has there ever been any suspicion of a team laying down in the Dist final?

Don't be surprised if it happens again this year. Both Covcath and Holmes coming out of the 35th have the potential to lose the district final and win the region final.

Very true, but the best team behind St. Henry might have been Dixie Heights. They had Russ Bramalege who, In My Opinion, was the best guard in the region. Even better than my close friend Fabiani. They also had size with Mays the 7footer, and the O'Toole brothers.

Holmes had a nice team to with Fischer, another nice scoring guard and NFL bound Brendan Englemon leading the way.

In my opinion this was the one of the best years for 9th Region basketball.

I remember that St. Henry team was a GREAT team. If it wasn't for an injury to one of their best players in the first game, I really think they maybe could have won it...

The next best team that year was Highlands with Ross Neltner & Kevin Gilles. They only lost 2 regular season games - 1 to Cov Cath, 1 to eventual state champ Mason County.

Doug Jones was a senior that year for Dixie as well, but injured his knee in football and missed his senior basketball season, if I remember correctly. Dixie wasn't as good in '03 as they were in '02 when they had both Joe & Russ Bramlage.

The trio from Holmes in '03 was Brandent Englemon, Ryan Fischer & Brandon Smith. Smith was tough - where is he now?

Exciting-yes

Good memory-NO Very depressing from this side! I can still see that shot in slow motion in my mind.
