February 1, 200818 yr I'm pretty sure you have to participate in regional and national tournaments. Correct! And let me tell you everyone, if you don't have a rating you are not very good. I have seen several of the latest, greatest, I can beat everyone, basement players come to the old Cincinnati Table Tennis Club and get handled by the lowest rated player at the Club. I have made some money playing world champion basement players but it really isn't much fun because the skill level is so much different. At the Dayton, OH club there were a couple of guys that would challenge basement players using a clip board instead of a paddle and they never came close to losing. They were every bit of 1400 players with the clip boards. Finally, most basement players would have a rating of under 1000 and anytime you jump 200 points it is a huge jump in table tennis.
February 1, 200818 yr The Guru stopping by to let us know his love for ping-pong, I love it. I have seen the Kelsch guy play and he is pretty darn good! I love table tennis. Since I am going to brag here probably my greatest day of table tennis was at the Bluegrass Games many years ago. My partner and I won the silver medal in OPEN doubles and I finished 4th in open singles. It was a 2 and out format, I did beat Todd Rose (from western KY) in singles and Todd finished 2nd in open singles losing to Charlie Buckley that day. I think Buckley beat me 18 and 18 (old scoring format) and we were all lucky John Allen didn't play that day. I know a lot of this may not mean anything to you but if you have played any TT you will know what I am talking about.

When I play at the club at which the type Guru is speaking of...I'm lucky to score a point. I stopped going because I can never compete at that level, you may think you can, but until you play that type of player, keep dreaming. If anyone is ever in Fern Creek look me up. My church has a table and lots of room.

February 1, 200818 yr Larry, What club are you speaking of? I played a few times at a Louisville club only it was located in Indiana. I think Dan Reams was one of the guys in charge.
February 1, 200818 yr I have to admit I did not realize that there were ping-pong clubs. We have about 9 to 12 guys that play, counting my son, on a regular basis and we have a blast. Some of the guys are awfully good and others average, but we battle and compete. A couple of guys have played in and won some tourneys!
February 1, 200818 yr I didn't know there were clubs either, TC. When I think of table tennis I think of China, where it's a national sport. When I was at EKU in the '70's they had a ping pong tournament at my dorm, and the Chinese exchange students destroyed everyone. It was easy. So, I would guess that the U.S. clubs would make the basement players in our country look like clowns, but the Chinese clubs (I assume they also have them) would make the U.S. clubs look likewise.
February 1, 200818 yr My last rating was 1757. That was from 04-30-91. I have battled the Guru a few times years past and he has a mean ping pong game and like he said, if you dont have a rating then you're not very good. That doesnt mean that you cannot have fun playing, just be careful who you challenge to a game for cash.

February 1, 200818 yr I know my dad used to play all the time at EKU when he was a student there in the late 70's, '77 thru '79. He said that the intramural tournaments were intense and that he won several of them, saying that all kinds of people played!
February 1, 200818 yr I entered in the Bluegrass Games last year and had to work and missed it but the Beechmont Club had several people go and two young people won Gold. This club Guru plays at Beechmont Community center and also play at Cresent Hill Baptist/Graceland Baptist Church. A person can play at these spots every day of the week. They also have folks come and teach and these people are world class players. There is an Asian fellow who loves to play me because I'll at least try who is ranked number 1 in the state. Lefthanded players destroy me. They use the 4MM yellow balls only.
February 1, 200818 yr Without a shadow of a doubt, I willing to bet out of ten games Ill win eight or more. Ive been playing Ping-Pong since I was in elementary school and I can never get enough of it. Its probably the only thing I have over my friends, and Im never afraid to let them know it. I've heard this isn't very true?:confused::sssh::lol:
