Bergamini out at St. X

Featured Replies

Announced yesterday to the players. This will be his last year. Long tenured Coach ends career on a down note...too bad. St. X is ready for a change...

Congrats to Coach B on a fine career. I'm sure his decision to step down had nothing to do with what some perceive to be a "down year". He's had better records in the past but this teams is much like many of the teams he's had in the past, deep with tough gritty players but short on D1 or even D2 caliber talent. Fair or not, the perception was that if schools like DeSales who also don't have an abundance of college bound players beat you on a regular basis something must be wrong with the program.

Anyone want to bet against X hiring within the school?

What about Kevin Klein (former Tiger), who has lead Waggener to a great season?

There are quite a few good coaches in the Louisville area with ties to St.X to choose from. I believe this will be a jump start for Tiger basketball with the new arena and good young new coach!

I vote they promote their freshman coach.:thumb::D

This post will get attention not only across Kentucky but also from around the country.

New Arena? When will it be done. How many will it seat and will it hosts regionals? Also when available would love to see some pics?

From what I have heard this was classless on ST.X part. He was forced to resign. I was told that Klein from Waggener is a done deal. Heard rumors that Ballard was chasing Klein because Renner is wanting to get into administration. Desales is winning because they have put a great emphasis on their feeder programs, especially at St. Nicholas formerly Mt. Carmel. Desales has a number of younger AAU programs that are feeding into their school. Desales in my oppinion is the top catholic program in Louisville. Has been ever since Male's Tom Crews went there. Maybe Bergamini didnt work to get the younger kids going in AAU. I dont know. But he is a class guy and a good coach and deserved better than be forced to resign.

Klein would be a great selection, hope it happens.

If true that he was forced out, I think "classless" is a tad bit strong. Firing him mid season could have been considered classless. But letting him finish the year out and announce his resignation to his team is hardly classless. The guy has been coaching at X well over 20 years, how many more seasons did they have to give him to be fair?

I could not agree more! It's more than time for a change and everyone knew it but the coach.

Joe B. is a great man and individual. He has his own style in coaching and philosophy on off season activities. 20+ years is long enough to prove that you can do the job and get it done. He has done a good job at X coaching. I would not say overachiving or anything like that, but it is "time for a change". It is no secret that the Tiger Basketball program is really a joke. Freshman and JV teams have traditionally won >85% of their games (Past 20 years) only to end up marginally above .500 at the varsity level. Post season play has been a problem way befor Bergy. Donlon was "replaced" because he could not win a district championship... The players, students, school and alumni deserve better than what the program is producing. All of these comments are directed to the "court" situation as it exist. As far as molding young men into leaders etc., Joe does a very good job at that.... This situatuion reminds me a lot of UK football. Are you satisfied with a 4 - 7 record? A lot of folks say sure, we play in the SEC, we are supposed to get beat.... Well, having a loosing record in Basketball at St. X for many years is NOT acceptable. Neither is a winning percentage marginally over .500. With the construction of the new arena and declining support for the program, a major change is needed and welcomed. Thanks Coach B for your efforts and commitment to the St. X B-ball program. Hope you remain in the St. X community.

As to the new coach: This is why the AD's run around always smiling because they have nothing to do..... Now, Alan has to make a decision. Hire from with in (Porta) or go outside and totally rebuild the program. I would imagine that Porta feels as if he is the "next in line" to take the job. If someone from the outside is brought in, who knows what will shake down....

Interesting times ahead.... Might be best to clear house and start a new.....

;)

I agree with Riverside, if we go outside for the hire we should let the new coach select his staff for the Freshmen and JV teams as well.

First...that is just funny! :lol::lol::lol:

Best of luck to Coach Bergamini. He is a very nice person.

IMO-there is not a finer man in the building than Coach B. Sad to see his reign end not on his own terms and I would love to see Kevin Klein come in with Coach B as an assistant but I am sure that is unlikely. My son played for Coach Klein at the Freshman level and again IMO, there wasn't a better Frosh or JV coach in town at that time. I had envisioned Coach B. turning the program over to Kevin at some point, but not in this fashion. :irked:
