Belfry's Schedule for 2008

Yeah.. I mean it really is hard to say. I have never personally seen Trinity play, but there credentials speak loudly.

In "up" years Belfry might be able to hang in there for a while. Who knows. Its a shame that the matchup isn't on for next season. Should be a very solid Belfry team. I guess they will just have to flex their muscle against Shelby Valley and East Carter again.

I have watched all of Belfry's title apperances since 2003. Their defense has really impressed me along with their ability to pound the ball. The only thing that might hurt them against us would be the fact that Louisville St.X and Cinci St.X are the only two teams that I can think of in recent memory that beat us with just the ground game. Both have similar depth to us. Watusi might be able to give you a better opinion on it though.

My wish list aside:

I think that playing Henry Clay would be a good pick up for the Pirates if they could get them to agree to it, or Lafayette with their pass oriented offense to help them prepare for anything they may run across.

Does anyone know the status of the Lawrence County series? The Pirates and Dawgs have been playing for quite a while now (10 years?), but with the recent coaching changes at LC it makes me wonder if it might not be the best thing for both teams to take some time off the series.

IMO, Belfry will definately have games with Holy Cross (PCB), Johnson Central (love the promise of this series), and Pikeville (rivalry).

That leaves Shelby Valley and East Carter. I can't see Haywood dropping Shelby Valley as Coach Saunders has been a class act at SV and is actively looking to improve his program, it also is a very short trip for the Pirates and Wildcats. Also, say what you will about the Wildcats, but they were the second best team in Pike County last year and if the program continues to improve as it has been and Pikeville continues to struggle, they may be making an arguement for hosting one night of the PCB before we know it.

Now EC is a different animal. I do believe that East Carter was pretty much a last minute addition to the schedule last year, and I am fairly certain Haywood does not care too much for playing another 3A who he could potentially meet again in the playoffs (although doubtfully). Last year's game was a lose-lose situation for Belfry as they travelled 2.5 hours to play an overmatched opponent late in the season in Russell's backyard practically.

I personally would love to see Letcher Central on the schedule in the short term as someone previously mentioned. Short trip, up and coming 5A program, and the opportunity to face a spread offense.

The prospect of Parkersburg, WV as mentioned a month ago on another thread also would be an excellent, and rewarding matchup. The Big Red is arguably the elite program in West Virginia (along with Morgantown), they produce several D-1 players, and it would be the equivolant of playing a 6A school. Most years Parkersburg would be the clear favorite, but Belfry is good enough to make the series very competitive on a year in, year out basis.

Alot of people forget, Belfry still is just a County School, in a County that also fields 5 total County football teams (Pike Central, SV, Phelps, East Ridge, Belfry). Needless to say all travel expenses fall directly on the Pirate program. I would love to see how Belfry would stack up against a Trinity or X or Highlands, but it just isn't economically feasible.

Belfry as a program truly is a Big Fish in a Small Pond.

Is it REALLY that much of a difference between traveling to Parkersburg WV or Lexington KY?

What does the extra hour of travel amount to, $200? Money well spend IMO.

No, there if very little difference. Belfry could play Lex Catholic just as easy as anybody. As a matter of fact, what a great matchup. Lex Cath nor Belfry can get a game. LexCath will travel as well.

Hmmm... I didn't think of that one. Belfry/LexCath would definately be a marquee game and the Knights proved they had no problem making the trek to Coal Country when they visited Pikeville this season.

I would love to see Russell play Belfry early during the regular season. I think it could be a good measuring stick to see how good they are. It is always fun to go to the CAM. I know Russell picked up Ironton for 2009 and Belfry would be great for 2010 and stop playing Raceland.

I would have to agree with all the players that Belfry has coming back. I was surprised at just how they dismantled Breathitt. I think had Russell been playing them instead of Breathitt we would have seen the same result. I really don't see any change next year.
The Black Bears of Harlan county will also be a hard out come playoff time. I think they will be in Breathitt Co. District next season. If they get a solid coach next season do not be surprised if they are not playing Belfry next season late in the playoffs.:D

Yeah its not that much difference but Parkersburg would be a heck of a game, those guys would be good for us to play.

Why would Parkersburg be any more inclined to play at Belfry than Bell Co., for example.

If anything they would be less. WV's ratings system, as someone mentioned earlier, gives them 1 reason not to play. Here are a few more.. If they want to play good competition Morgantown is closer, Martinsburg just as close, Wheeling is closer, and there is a state called Ohio very near that plenty of competitive games can be found.

Playing Parkersburg is a pipe dream so you guys can scratch that one.

Playing Russell would be great from a competitive standpoint, but I doubt Coach Haywood or Coach McGlone would like to schedule a team they could meet late in the playoffs.

The one thing I am sure of regarding next year:

-Belfry will be unbelievably talented and experienced comapred to Pirate teams of the past.

-Earning another tirp to Louisville should be the goal of this team.

- Belfry has GOT to see better defensive teams with more quickness than what they faced last year in order to be able to knock off Central who will have 3 D-1 prospects
