I'm sure many of you will just look at this as Peyton-bashing (which I love to do). But hear me out.

 

In the SB, the Colts drew one of the worst SB representatives of all time as an opponent in what has clearly been a bad 2-3 year run by the NFC in comparison to the AFC. Even if the Bears weren't the worst SB team ever, their offense was, and provided very little challenge to a pretty good Indy defense.

 

They should've lost to Baltimore in the playoffs in the divisional round. If Baltimore has any kind of offense they win that game by a bundle.

 

They should've lost to New England, but the Pats obviously let up on the intensity and let the Colts back in the game, secure in their thinking that Peyton and Co. would roll over like they had done so many times before against NE.

 

Interesting side note: The Brady/NE performance this year of running up the score any chance they got was a direct response to the thinking that they just didn't build a big enough lead against NE in the AFC title game. Well, that, and Brady was upset Manning got one over on him and wanted to break Manning's TD record as payback.

 

I'm of the opinion a lot of teams are scared of the Colts uniform and are psyched out before they ever play Peyton and Co. After all, they've been told by every talking head out there with a Peyton Man Crush that he and the Colts are the greatest thing since sliced bread. The deification of the Colts by the national media has gone completely overboard in this area.

 

This season, with a weakened defense because of a missing Freeney and an oft-injured Sanders, the Colts should've lost many more games than what they did, but got over because other teams lay down for the Colts jersey. I don't think they are any better than Tennessee or Jax, they just have the mental edge because they've owned those teams in recent years. Once those two and Houston figure out Indy isn't any better than them, the Colts will finally fade away to welcomed obscurity.

 

Now, in this year's divisional round, Peyton and Co. proved my point by choking -- and there's no other way to describe it -- away the game against SD. Why couldn't Almighty Peyton complete any passes in the fourth quarter? And why couldn't the Indy defense shut down San Diego's lineup from the second half of their fourth preseason game? With the officials openly helping the Colts out?

 

But, alas, at least the Manning Face resurfaced.

 

Bottom line: The Colts' Super Bowl win was a fluke. They got the best possible draw in facing another team that fluked its way into the Super Bowl. I give the Colts -- who, like New England and Baltimore, have suddenly become very old -- one more year as one of the NFL's elite franchises before teams start figuring out the Colts get by on smoke and mirrors.

Neither Jim nor I have ever made our dislike for the ESPN/Fox Sports God of Football and his subsequent retinue a secret. Jim is just more vocal about it.

 

I don't care for either Manning, as I stated in the other thread. I just started it to keep the "EVIL PATRIOTS" talk a little quieter by getting the Manningites doing something else.

For the millionth time, it's no secret I dislike Peyton. But rather than just dismissing my assessment, why not tell me specific points where you think I'm wrong? Or is it because you know I'm right?

What a goofy thread. The Colts did win in New England to get too the Super Bowl didn't they? The leauge has a lot of good teams each year. The way the NFL is set up anybody can beat anybody on a given night. You don't get to the super bowl by being bad. The Bears lost a lot up front this year on defense which hurt them. They have never been an offensive juggernaut recently. They are built on defense and special teams. They have arguably the best kick returner ever that did return the opening kickoff back in the Super Bowl. They had an awsome defense that picked Manning off on the first drive of the Super Bowl. The Colts EARNED their way into the Super Bowl and earned the win.

To say people fear the name on the jersey or the QB's name might have some value but let's not act like people don't fear the name Patriots or the name Brady. Just like a lot fear the name Green Bay and Farve.

Look back at what started this Pats run. They played the unbeatable "greatest show on turf!" Everybody feared the Rams and Warner at the time.

The Colts had a great season but they played without arguably the best player to rush the QB in the NFL, arguably the most consistant WR in the NFL, they lost their RB which is a STUD, the leauges defenseive MVP got hurt etc. They still had a chance to win it.

You think the Pats losing Moss, Maroney, Harrison and Seymour/Vrabel or Wilfork wouldn't hurt them pretty bad? How about the Giants lose Plax, Pierce, Strahan and Jacobs for the Super Bowl? Think that might hurt them?

The Colts had a great year. They couldn't overcome their injuries and got beat by one of the top 4 most talented teams in the NFL. There's not a lot of shame there.

But, Tennessee and Jax have been up-and-coming the last few years, and Jax in particular has had comparable talent to Indy at least the last 2-3 years, and couldn't get over the hump because they hadn't learned how to beat good teams yet. In other words, they lost because they were told they were supposed to and believed it.

 

And I can play the should've/could've game all night. And I still say the Colts backed their way to an SB win because the teams they played against were accomplices (Baltimore and Chicago's horrible offense, New England relaxing after getting the big lead). Not once during that playoff run did I say to myself, "Wow, Indy really has upped their game for the playoffs!"

My whole point is the Colts did nothing different last year as opposed to all the other years when they choked mightily in the postseason. It's just that last year the teams let them off the hook.
